CBS hides ID of Navy SEAL who wrote bin Laden book

(AP) ? CBS News is disguising the identity of a retired Navy SEAL who wrote a book about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden so it can protect "an American hero" ? even though other media outlets have said who he is.

CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager said Thursday he'd make the same decision to withhold the identity even if the network hadn't landed an exclusive interview with the author, who participated in the May 2011 raid in Pakistan. Scott Pelley's interview with the ex-SEAL will be on "60 Minutes" on Sept. 9 and was previewed on the "CBS Evening News" on Wednesday.

The book, titled "No Easy Day" and written by one of the men in the room when the al-Qaida leader was killed, was written under the pseudonym Mark Owen. Last week, Fox News Channel first reported Owens' real identity as Matt Bissonnette, and The Associated Press also identified Bissonnette after getting independent confirmation.

Even after the other organizations revealed Bissonnette's identity, Fager said he made sure that all parts of his news organization did not.

"This is an American hero," Fager said. "He risked his life to do this job. Isn't it our responsibility to protect him? To hear his story is one thing, but to reveal his name so he becomes a target? I'd like to think that news people are Americans first. I feel that way."

For the interview, CBS disguised Bissonnette's voice. A makeup person also concealed the author's looks so effectively before the "60 Minutes" interview that Pelley, who had met him three times before, did not recognize him upon entering the room, said Fager, the executive producer of "60 Minutes."

After identifying Bissonnette, Fox News Executive Vice President and Executive Editor John Moody said that "once you write a book, anonymously or not, you have no reasonable expectation of privacy."

The AP decided to use his name because it was already on the Internet and on the air, so the expectation of keeping his name out of the greater public was very low. The AP informed Special Operations Command that it was going to use the name, and no government agency tried to dissuade it. The AP does withhold a name if someone makes a compelling case that its publication would endanger him or her.

Fager said he's not sure what the value of reporting Owens' real name is for the viewer.

"We're not in the business of chasing down people who work in these agencies, whether it's a Navy SEAL or the CIA, and revealing their names to the public," he said.

The Pentagon's top lawyer has informed the author, addressed in a letter as Mr. "Mark Owen," with quotation marks, that he violated agreements to not divulge military secrets and that as a result the Pentagon is considering taking legal action against him. The author referred requests for comment about the letter to his publisher, who was not immediately available Thursday.

Jose A. Rodriguez Jr., former director of the National Clandestine Service of the CIA, said it shouldn't be a surprise that the ex-SEAL's real name came out.

"It's almost to be expected in today's world when you write a book like he wrote that commands so much interest," said Rodriguez, who was responsible for helping to keep CIA employees' identities safe.

Rodriguez ordered interrogation tapes of suspected al-Qaida members destroyed so the identities of the questioners could not be found out.

Rodriguez, author of "Hard Measures: How Aggressive CIA Actions After 9/11 Saved Lives," said he sympathized with the author's concern about his safety.

"If I were advising some of these media organizations, I would have urged them to be very cautious about leaking the true name of someone who participated in a raid to kill bin Laden," he said.

Bob Steele, a media ethics expert and professor at DePauw University, said the media have to set the bar high before granting anonymity to a book author. In this case, it's even more important for people to know the author, because the book makes an assertion that the raid did not go down quite like the Obama administration had reported.

"If you leave a name out of a story, you diminish its factual accuracy and its authenticity," Steele said. "A major piece of the jigsaw puzzle is missing."

ABC News and NBC News have not used Bissonnette's name in any stories about the case.

CNN had not been using the author's real name because Pentagon officials had asked that it not be revealed, spokeswoman Bridget Leininger said. But on the air Thursday, CNN showed clips from the CBS story and used Bissonnette's name, saying it was being revealed "under the Pentagon's guidance."

"By this week, it was clear his real identity was not going to remain private, and we reported it," Leininger said.

Massachusetts Personal Injury Law News: New Law in ...

The health care cost control bill recently passed by the
Massachusetts legislature and signed by Governor Deval Patrick on August

6 contains specific language that facilitates an approach of Disclosure,

Apology, and Offer (DA&O) to address medical malpractice claims.

Language in the bill was agreed to by three principal groups ? the Massachusetts Medical Society, Massachusetts Bar Association, and Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys. Approval of the law makes Massachusetts the first in the nation to have comprehensive legislation that will enable the conduct of a DA&O program in different practice environments with different insurance arrangements.?

Changes include provisions for a six-month, pre-litigation resolution period that affords the time to go through a DA&O process with sharing of all pertinent medical records by the patient, full disclosure by providers, and for statements of apology by providers to be inadmissible in court.

Under the DA&O model, healthcare professionals and institutions and their insurers disclose to patients and families when unanticipated adverse outcomes occur; investigate and explain what happened; establish systems to improve patient safety and prevent the recurrence of such incidents; and, where appropriate, apologize and offer fair financial compensation without the patient having to resort to legal action. Patients will always have the right to consult an attorney to advise them of their rights and to evaluate the fairness of any offer or to bring legal action if they so choose.

The Disclosure, Apology, and Offer approach to settling medical liability claims in the commonwealth was announced in April as an initiative launched by an alliance of six major health care and patient advocacy organizations.

7 Quick Takes Saturday!

#7

Seriously, this week has been insane. The first week of school went beautifully for Sienna, but unfortunately all the long, quiet hours of blogging I envisioned never quite materialized.

This is partially the fault of Florida and its stupid tendency to get hit with hurricanes, and my subsequent need to prepare for said impending hurricane, partially the fault of Lincoln, whose due date grows ever nearer and whose enormous piles of newborn clothes insist upon being washed and put away, and partially my fault, because every time the littlest minions were napping and Sienna was at school, I napped instead of blogging.

But elsewhere on the internet, things have been rockin?! I mean, look at the headlines! Todd Akin! Paul Ryan! The Empire State Building shooter! Obama?s Twitter followers! Prince Harry?s admirable bum! I have opinions on every single crazy thing that happened this week, and wanted to blog on all of them, and instead I slept.

I sincerely hope my blog survives this pregnancy.

#6

When the Ogre was in Vegas, he stumbled across a little Italian market that I somehow missed during our three-year exile there, and brought me home bucatini and savoiardi. Genuinely Italian bucatini and savoiardi, in the familiar Italian packaging I love so much. I was beyond excited, and decided to invite our next-door neighbors (who also studied in Rome and understand the appeal of all things Roman) over tonight for bucatini alla?amatriciana and tiramisu?two things that can only be properly made with truly Italian bucatini and savoiardi.

I was so excited. They were so excited. The kids were so excited.

And then yesterday Liam got pinkeye and a fever and ruined everything.

I feel sorry for the kid, I really do, but I feel even more sorry for me. There?s nothing I love more than cooking for company, and Italian food is my favorite thing to cook, and outside of penne alla vodka, amatriciana and tiramisu are my favorite Italian things to cook, and besides, tiramisu. I was so looking forward to it. And now I?m really sad that there?s not a gorgeous tiramisu resting in my refrigerator and becoming magical.

If Liam wasn?t so pathetic and cuddly, I?d be seriously annoyed. As it is, I just really want some tiramisu.

So the night before last, I was getting ready for bed and the Ogre came into the bathroom with a really strange look on his face. I asked him what was wrong and he just motioned for me to follow him, so I did. We walked into the front room, where there were three small (maybe one-month-old) kittens peering into the window and meowing.

It was so heartbreaking. They really wanted to come in the house, but we aren?t allowed to have animals in our house per our landlord?s request. So we set out some milk for them and they took up residence on our front stoop, periodically pawing at the window and meowing plaintively.

It broke my heart, and all I could think about were those poor little kittens getting eaten by bears or alligators or panthers, so finally the Ogre put them in our garage.

I spent a good deal of yesterday calling no-kill shelters (because did you know that even the Humane Society euthanizes?) but didn?t have any luck. We moved the kittens out onto our lanai when it got hot, and they?re still out there. We?ve been trying to find homes for them, but in the meantime our kids have fallen totally in love with them. Sienna especially. I told them that we have to find a place for them today, because obviously we can?t keep three kittens on a screen porch during a hurricane, and Sienna broke into tears and spent a half-hour mourning the unfairness of her existence in her room.

#4

It was like looking into a time-traveling mirror. When I was little, all I wanted was a kitten. I was in love with kittens, obsessed with them even, but my dad is allergic and we couldn?t have one.

I was convinced that it was really a plot by my parents to make my life miserable and deny me the very thing that I wanted more than anything else, and I spent many long hours bemoaning the injustice of my father?s mythical ?allergies?. Kind of like Sienna spent an hour this morning insisting that our landlord must hate her.

This was not an adorable or endearing look into my past. I?m in for a melodramatic few years, until puberty hits. And remembering my own hormonal wackiness (seriously, I swung from Hanson fan to goth to head cheerleader to Nietzschean pseudo-intellectual), I?m going to do the smart thing and just ship her off to a convent. With high walls. And nuns who understand that Nietzsche is not appropriate reading for teenagers who already think they know everything.

#3

When I was in college I rectified the injustice of my childhood by rescuing a 2-week-old kitten from a crack house.

It was somewhat less picturesque than this pretty drawing, but the kitten became a fixture in our lives. I couldn?t have her in? my apartment because my roommate was allergic, so the Ogre kept her for me. We named her Loki, after the Norse god of mischief, which was a perfect name because she grew up to be a perfectly horrible cat.

Seriously, the thing they never tell children about kittens is that they grow up to be cats. And this cat was a be-yotch. With a capital B. The only person she loved in the entire world was the Ogre. Everyone else she either treated with contempt and disdain or tried to kill with her claws. I thought I hated her, and then we had to get rid of her when we moved away from Vegas and I cried.

It turns out I didn?t hate her. I really miss her. The Ogre misses her even more. She was his late-night study companion. She?d always hop into his lap when he sat up late, reading in the Wisdom Chair, and sharpen her claws on his shirt. He said it kept him awake.

#2

Why yes, we do have a chair called the Wisdom Chair. This is Sienna sitting in it. It?s called the Wisdom Chair because it was the Ogre?s father?s chair, and he used to sit in it when he called the family together for lectures. It?s the Ogre?s now, and any time he has to have a serious talk with one of the kids he sits in it.

I tried to get rid of it when we moved away from Texas, and he still hasn?t forgiven me for that.

#1

I actually did dream that my house was clean last night, but I woke up and found that it?isn?t. And since we might have to put up hurricane shutters and do other hurricane-prep-things this afternoon, I must go do the Saturday chores. Grimly. Have a wonderful, hurricane-free weekend! I?ll just be here, stuck inside, depressed because I can?t see the sun. Again.

Dear Florida: you do not deserve to be called the sunshine state. I hereby dub thee ?The State of False Advertising and Octogenarians.?

Go see Jen for more quick takes!

INSTANTLY fix the US: How Obama/Romney could win instantly; Fix US debt overnight

INSTANTLY fix the US: How Obama/Romney could win instantly; Fix US debt overnight

Some simple math on how the richest 5% of Americans.....could instantly fix our national debt. And how Romney or Obama could capitalize on this fact.

The US set a record last year for total number of millionaires (U.S. Has Record Number of Millionaires - The Wealth Report - WSJ) at 3,100,000 (about 1% of the population). They had a combined wealth of about $11,000,000,000 (trillion).

US national debt is about 16 trillion. (U.S. National Debt Clock : Real Time).

Now, if the top 1% of Americans, all millionaires with 11 trillion in total wealth, EACH dedicated 1,000,000 in ONE single contribution to the country.......in one year, overnight with one collective act, the top one percent of earners in this nation would cut the national debt by 20% instantly.

And what if we asked the top 5% to do the same, but a bit less for each step? Say the top 2-5% each contribute 500,000, or 250,000??? Thats about 15,000,000 people. If each of those top 5% gave 500,000.......thats another 7.5 trillion dollars.

Combined...thats over half the national debt GONE, instantly.

It would be voluntary. A massive collective effort. An epic act equal to World War 2. Literally SAVES our nation. Romney or Obama could call for this epic, unselfish act. Pass a bill that says once these brave, heroic private citizens reach that total voluntarily, the federal govt automatically kicks in spending cuts of equal proportion until this damn thing is balanced and the debt gone.

Some would be angered by this very notion.

- "It aint fair"
- "It aint my job to pay the debt"
- "Why me, why dont the bottom half pay??"

Well, like I said, this would be an effort economically that would equal the WW2 generations effort to save this country. Would we be up to it? What if after we asked the top 5%, we then asked the top 10% to pitch in another contribution? The top 6%-10%, abuot another 15 million people, could kick in 100K each. Thats another 1.5 trillion GONE from the debt!!!!

And what if...God help us.....we asked the top 10% to do this 2 years in a row. We looked to them as the true saviors of our nation, and they equalled the effort we put out in WW2 to save this nation. They could erase the debt in 2 years. Gone. Add in the Fed's agreed-upon cuts in spending.....and wow, what a potential miracle.

Any chance the top 1%, then top 5%, then top 10% of wealth earners in this nation would make the personal sacrifice to save this nation? Our military has been doing it for centuries. Our teachers, cops, firemen have been doing it to save our communties for centuries.

Now is the time that the financial and economic kings of our land COULD step up, and put forth this herculean effort to save this country.

Cerebus High Society Negatives Destroyed By Fire | Bleeding Cool ...

Dave Sim writes to funders of the Cerebus Digital Kickstarter;

Dave Sim, here: ?Just thought everyone should know: ?Fisher came over today and asked if I had heard from Sandeep. ?No, I hadn?t. ?Hands me today?s RECORD. ?Front page: Sandeep?s place ? and the buildings on either side of him ? were gutted by fire yesterday afternoon. He got out in one piece but with nothing but the clothes on his back and his wallet (he had been in the shower and a cop showed up at the door: ??You have to leave. NOW?) The whole place went up in about five minutes.

All of the negatives for HIGH SOCIETY were destroyed as well as the 11?17 scanner and the new negative scanner. ?No insurance. ?So, I thought I?d better let everyone know that we?re definitely not on track for the September 12 launch at this point.

I don?t expect that I?ll hear from Sandeep for at least a few days ? he?s staying with friends and obviously has a lot more important things to think about than HIGH SOCIETY DIGITAL.

Okay ? gotta run to make my 3:00 prayer. ?Please feel free to relay this to anyone you think should know. ?Particularly people who are waiting on HIGH SOCIETY DIGITAL.

I?m sure there will be updates later. But damn?

roof repair hollywood - The Benefits of Roof Repair

One of the most fundamental home maintenance activities involves repairing your roof. This is because the entire building cannot function or stand without a proper roof. A roof must be able to resist harsh weather conditions especially during the rainy season. In addition, the roof needs to expand and contract depending on the different temperatures of the environment. Lastly, a roof must be able to resist pests from entering the building.

Sometimes, these roofs are not able to function as intended. When this happens, the roofs must be repaired. Roof repair Hollywood cannot be ignored because it leaves a building looking better than before. When you need to repair your roof, it is always important to understand the options that are available so that you can make a wise decision. Some people choose a roof repair Hollywood option consisting of the same roofing material that was there before. Well, others decide to go for a different material. When you choose the latter, it is always important to consider the strength of your roof so as to match it with the roofing material.

Most people prefer using roofing materials that are durable that require the least maintenance so that they can save on the extra time and costs. When the owner takes time to repair his or her roofs after a specific period of time, he or she will find that problems such as rotting will be avoided. Indeed a rotting roof can cost the entire household and can be fatal if the roof caves in. Roof repair can be done in sections or in its entirety depending on the damage and the age of the roofing material. Sometimes, all the owner needs to do is repair the shingles. Repairing the roof has several benefits for the owner to enjoy. They include:

* Preventive measure: Roof repair experts advice building owners to regularly repair their roofs so that they can remain durable. When roof problems especially on the shingles are detected early, the cost for repairing them is usually less than when they continue deteriorating such that in the future, the roof might need to be replaced.

* Restores the attractive nature of the roof: A leaking or rotting roof is never appealing to the eye. However, when roof repair is done, the roof regains its functioning and is therefore able to protect people from pests, insects and harmful weather conditions.

* Improves on the quality of the roof: The first place that is assessed when investing in a house is the roof. This is because it is the most important part of a building. When damages are repaired on roofs, the quality of the roof is enhanced, which extends its duration.

It is important to hire the services of a roof repair expert to renew the comfort and security of your building and restore your home. Visit Paul Bange Roofing for more info.

New Business Welcomes Dirty Dogs and Messy Pets - Commack ...

?

Friends since second grade, Linda Love and Doreen Murphy, decided to take their passion for pets into a full time business venture with the launch of Groomeria a semi-mobile pet grooming business.

The business, housed in an RV, is moved every other week. The pair takes turns in their hometowns, alternating weeks. Murphy lives in Commack, by Kings Park Road and Love in Medford.

?We spend one week here in Commack and then the next we head to Medford,? said Murphy. The duo is looking into becoming fully mobile in the future.

Both are recent retirees, Murphy was a teacher in the Commack school district and Love a nurse, but decided to go into business almost immediately after. They opened in July and have a website and Facebook page.

They became certified in their field while their husbands worked on converting the RV into a grooming studio, equipped with a large tub, heat lamps, a grooming table and organic shampoos and conditioners. Two groomers per pet is the standard.

?We really pamper the dogs,? said Murphy, who added they groom cats too. ?We don?t put them under the large blowers that some places use to dry dogs. We keep them under the heat lamp and dry them that way. We finish with a blow dryer so the dogs never feel frightened like they may with those large dryers.?

Murphy said her biggest challenge in opening the new business was earning the trust of owners bringing their pets by for the first time.

?Getting a person to have faith in you, and earning that. It is great when you get a repeat customer because you know you passed their test.?

Murphy said it is also a badge of honor when a dog that had a bad experience at a groomer and turn it into an enjoyable experience for the dog and the owner.

Murphy said the two don?t expect to get rich off the business, but that they enjoy what they do and make a little profit.

?We may not end up rich, but it?s not about the money. We already had a job, now it?s about having a good time.?

Ethiopian strongman and Western ally, Meles, dies

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, an economic reformer condemned at home as an autocrat but hailed in the West as a bulwark against militant Islam, has died after a long illness, aged 57.

Twenty-one years after he seized power from a military junta, Meles died in a Brussels hospital late on Monday, ending months of rumor that he was gravely ill and prompting sharply contrasting reactions; the White House mourned his "untimely loss", while opponents rejoiced at the death of a "tyrant".

Deputy Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn will be sworn in as acting prime minister by parliament and the ruling party will meet to choose a successor but no date has been set.

Secretive to the end, it was left to officials of the European Union to disclose that Meles was being treated in the Belgian capital when he succumbed to an unspecified illness. Government spokesman Bereket Simon said only that he had been ailing for a year and died after being rushed to intensive care.

Meles had seized power in 1991 from Mengistu Haile Mariam's military junta and went on to become a towering political figure on the continent. Widely credited for steering one of the world's poorest countries to fast economic growth, he made his predominantly Christian country a close ally of Washington and twice sent troops into neighboring Somalia to fight Islamists.

"The death of Prime Minister Meles has robbed Africa of one of its greatest sons," the African Union, which is headquartered in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, said in a statement.

Rights groups criticized him for cracking down hard on dissent but the West generally turned a blind eye to the repression, reluctant to pick a fight with a partner in the fight against al Qaeda-linked groups in Africa.

U.S. President Barack Obama offered condolences, praising Meles's commitment to the poor and calling it an "untimely loss" for Ethiopia; British Prime Minister David Cameron described Meles as an "inspirational spokesman for Africa".

In Addis Ababa, Ethiopians crowded into cafes to watch television coverage after a special news broadcast announced Meles's death. An EU source said he had been a patient at the Saint-Luc University Hospital in Brussels.

His deputy Hailemariam said they had spoken only recently:

"He was recovering well, even taking part in light sporting activities. We were often in touch while he was recovering and we were optimistic that he would go on towards a full recovery," he said. "Meles was one of a kind. It is very difficult to replace a man of his stature."

A cortege accompanied by police outriders left a hotel next to the hospital, and took a casket, believed to hold Meles's body, to a private Belgian airstrip near the city's main airport. Belgian military officials and police were at the airport as the casket was loaded onto an Ethiopian Airlines jet.

CONFLICTS

Somalia's al Shabaab militants, who encountered Ethiopian troops twice under Meles' tenure, once in 2006-2009 and again from December last year, were jubilant: "He led the African leaders who had fingers in Somalia for two decades, but all in vain," said al Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage.

Government spokesman Bereket said Africa's second most populous nation was stable and would continue on the path charted by Meles. The ruling party, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front, will select his successor.

Negasso Gidada, who was president during Meles' tenure and now chairman of the opposition movement Unity for Democracy and Justice, said he hoped the transition would be peaceful: "We urge the EPRDF to change for the good the political, democratic and human rights situation in the country," he said.

David Shinn, a former U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia, said he expected many of Meles' defense policies to remain the same: "For internal security reasons, there will be a continuing focus on Somalia and I do not foresee any significant change towards Eritrea," said Shinn, referring to Ethiopia's arch-foe.

A long-running conflict has fuelled tensions along their disputed border and both governments accuse each other of supporting the others' rebel groups.

"What will happen to this problem, we leave to the incoming government of Ethiopia," Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Salih Mohammed said in South Africa, describing Meles as having been "instrumental" in the crisis.

Meles presided over a seven-year run of double-digit economic growth, advocating a mixture of heavy state spending and private investment.

He was widely applauded for ploughing money into infrastructure but criticized by some for selling off swathes of land to foreigners. Many Ethiopians complain that his close business ties with China did not translate into more jobs.

RIGHTS RECORD

International rights groups criticized Meles's handling of dissent. He rounded up numerous opposition leaders after the disputed 2005 polls and several opponents and journalists have been arrested under a 2009 anti-terrorism law. Late last year, two Swedish journalists were jailed for 11 years for promoting the activities of a rebel group and entering Ethiopia illegally.

"Today is a day of joy for most Ethiopians and all freedom loving people around the world," opposition website Ethiopian Review said, describing Meles as a "genocidal tyrant".

Former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said Meles's death heralded a challenging time for Ethiopia.

"I ardently hope that the transition period will be smooth and peaceful and that Ethiopia sees leadership that reflects the aspirations of its people and realizes the potential of this extraordinary country," Annan said in a statement.

State television said details of Meles's state funeral would be announced soon.

Acting Prime Minister Hailemariam, 47, was an adviser to Meles in 2006 before being picked as his deputy in 2010. He had also replaced Meles as chair of a number of parliamentary committees in the past few years, a sign that he was being groomed for the post, diplomats say.

Ryan Seacrest gives other people jobs

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Apparently, there are a few jobs that Ryan Seacrest doesn't do.

The "American Idol" and "On Air With Ryan Seacrest" host, E! News managing editor and anchor, and head of Ryan Seacrest Productions is giving jobs to other people that he could, no doubt, just as easily perform single-handedly. RSP is responsible for "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," its E! spin-offs, and "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution," among other shows.

Who will do the jobs that Seacrest, improbably, does not?

First, there's Nina Wass, a producer of more than 500 episodes and twenty network pilots. As RSP's new executive vice president of scripted programming, she will help the company further expand into scripted television.

Heather Schuster, meanwhile, is RSP's new senior vice president of development. She joins the company from Reveille/Shine, where she was SVP of creative affairs and an executive producer.

But wait. There are other jobs that Seacrest is not, as of this writing, doing himself.

One of them, RSP vice president of development, belongs to Joseph Ferraro, who was previously vice president of programming at OWN. Also, Gordon Cassidy, who has worked as a development consultant with Seacrest's company, is joining it full time as vice president of current programming.

Seacrest has also allowed three producers to make shows with RSP, rather than creating them himself with a mere snap of his fingers.

The company has signed an overall deal with Emmy-winner Eric Lange, an 18-year film and television veteran whose credits include "The Deadliest Catch." It has made another overall deal with Dan and Ben Newmark, who recently sold a comedy to TBS.

Finally, Noah Oppenheim has signed on as a consultant with RSP after working as a senior producer of "Today," a show that Seacrest does not single-handedly write, anchor and produce. (Though he is a correspondent for it.)

What Happens After Death

Kendra (Alger) Amrine at age 16, from an article in the Tracy Press in 1992.

My first crush was a girl named Kendra Alger. ?I was seven years old. ?We had just moved from a town called Milpitas in the southern curve of the San Francisco Bay Area to a town called Tracy at the edge of California?s Great Central Valley. ?We settled into the Tennis Village neighborhood and Kendra lived a few doors down from me on Renown Drive. ?I had never seen shiny platinum hair quite the equal of hers. ?She was sweet and gentle-hearted, and although I didn?t really have a term for it at the time (I didn?t know what a ?crush? was), I found her fascinating.

Living on the same street for a couple years, and being in the same grade in a small town, we saw one another periodically over the years. ?She was always kind, polite and thoughtful. ?She went on to college, married, and had four children. ?While celebrating her wedding anniversary with her husband recently, on August 16th, she died suddenly. ?She was 35. ?It was probably a stroke. ?Now her Facebook page is filled with friends who (knowing her better than I ever did) are testifying to her extraordinary generosity as well as her devotion to her family and her church.

Raymond Lo has a very different story. ?He lived to 68. ?But Raymond Lo ? my wife?s uncle ? was larger than life. ?I?ve never met anyone with a greater thirst for learning and life. ?When I first met him, he was in his mid-fifties and?teaching himself gymnastics?on a set of rings, pommel horse and parallel bars that he had made for himself in his garage. ?A former architect who had established a successful lumber export business, he took me and my soon-to-be-wife to several outstanding Chinese restaurants around New York City and peppered me with questions about how to do various gymnastics skills.

Raymond Lo on horseback in Mongolia.

That was just his way, always learning something new. ?And if you tried to tell him that people in their 50s cannot simply pick up gymnastics from scratch, he would have laughed and done it anyway. ?Raymond Lo was a lifelong student, a soldier, an architect, an entrepreneur, a businessman, a martial artist, an occasional gymnast, a golfer, a world traveler, proficient in several languages, an expert in everything from woodcarving to sushi to the proper way to use an Indiana-Jones-style whip ? and the list goes on and on. ?Having amassed some wealth, he was, quietly, extremely generous to friends and others in need. ?He was like Superman but with kids and a much better sense of humor. ?An excellent family man, he loved his children and grandchildren something fierce, and I only hope my own daughters can love and admire me when they?re older as much as his daughter Evelyn loves and admires her daddy. ?Raymond also made me feel welcome in my wife?s extended family, and I will always be grateful to him for that gift.

Raymond?s decline and death to lung cancer were only shocking because he had seemed so invincible. ?Radiantly confident, endlessly hard working, with a tall frame and a broad muscular chest, well into his sixties Raymond Lo seemed as though he would live forever. ?By the time my wife and I moved to Atlanta, about ten minutes from his home, ?Uncle Raymond? was already in decline. ?Time seemed to have caught up with him, after he had outrun it all those years. ?He was quieter, more weary. ?He survived his variety of lung cancer longer than anyone had a right to expect, but finally it took his life.

Raymond and Kendra were beautiful people who lived rich and happy lives, but they were very different. ?About the only thing they have in common is that they?re both gone, leaving families behind that will try to pick up the pieces and keep on living.

Now, employing all the philosophical and theological sophistication that was conferred upon me through my various university degrees, let me just say: death sucks. ?I hate it.

I have my beliefs. ?I believe that all things were created, that the Creator entered into history to communicate with us as a human being, and that the incarnate God defeated death, provided for eternal communion with Himself, and inaugurated a new life and a new creation that is already breaking into the world but not yet manifest. ?So I believe that death is dying. ?I believe that death has lost its sting. ?I believe that God will one day wipe away the last tear.

I hold fast to these beliefs with the passion of faith, but I?m not?certain?of them. ?On some days, they feel more like hopes than beliefs. ?I have to acknowledge it?s fully possible that I will find myself upon my death bed, I will squeeze the hands of my wife and my daughters, my heart will cease beating, my brain will fall silent, and I will simply cease to be. ?Or there could be an afterlife, but not like I imagine. ?I wish that I were resplendently certain that something awaits us after death, and something good. ?But I?m not.

I?am?certain that our lives are very brief. ?They can end swiftly and unexpectedly. ?You can be toasting your wedding anniversary one moment ? and gone the next. ?You can kiss your children goodbye as you go out on a date night ? and never kiss them again. ?I am certain that even the strongest among us will fade and perish.

I will die. ?You will too. ?How shall we then live?

I did not earn this life. ?No one owed it to me. ?It?s a gift. ?If I have a tomorrow, that too is a gift.

I?m grateful that I was raised in the arms of a loving mother. ?I?m grateful that my father and I are friends. ?That my hero once told me that I?m his hero. ?That my brother always had my back. ?That my sister came into our lives. ?That I learned of victory and defeat and how to live with both. ?That I spent lovely years in beautiful places thinking ancient thoughts. ?That the best girl I?ve ever met said yes. ?That my years have been rich with friends. ?That my firstborn loves her daddy like crazy, and that my father taught her how to fish. ?That my one-year-old smiles when I dance for her. ?And that I get to provide for the people I love by doing something I love.

Life?s too short to spend our years in resentment or bitterness. ?Life?s too short not to seek what is true and good and beautiful before nightfall. ?And life?s too short to spend your time doing anything other than what God made you to do. ?Savor the people and purposes God has given you. ?You never know when the hour of surrender will come.

Taylor Swift to Set Digital Sales Record

We still may not be sure about whom Taylor Swift is singing in her latest single, "We Are Never Getting Back Together," but we can be certain of one thing:

It's already a huge hit.

The track is on pace for 600,000 downloads in its opening week, meaning it will challenge Flo Rida (and "Right Round") for the largest debut of all-time and shatter the female record-holder: Lady Gaga with "Born This Way."

Taylor Swift in White

The song also broke in to the Billboard Hot 100 at number-72, but its initial seven days of sales, combined with its overwhelming airplay, make it a strong favorite to hold the top spot later this month.

SoundScan will post final scales figures tomorrow, but we don't need to wait until then to declare: the music world belongs to Taylor Swift. All other artists are just living in it.

Take The Time To Learn About Affiliate Marketing | Successful ...

Have people ever told you that you?d make a great salesman? With affiliate marketing, you can turn your natural sales skills into a profitable career. However, it takes more than a good sales pitch to succeed at affiliate marketing. In the following paragraphs, you?ll find tips that will turn you into a marketing pro.

A great affiliate marketing tip is to make sure the vendor you?re working with doesn?t use tricks on their sales page to cheat you out of your commission. Sometimes companies will offer the visitor different options in terms of payment, and by selecting those options, you won?t receive any commission.

A great way to improve the visibility of your affiliates products is to create a review section in your site. This provides even more advertisements, without bombarding your page with ads for people to click. This is a great way to get your readers interested in the products that you are advertising.

Make your site helpful to your readers. Don?t make affiliate products the ?meat? of your site; provide useful content and good information, then add affiliate products that complement the information you are providing. Instead of just listing a bunch of links for books you want people to buy, write an actual review of each book. This adds value for your readers and for doing the work, you deserve something in return.

When you decide on an affiliate program to join, become a customer. Order a product, review the process, and then call their customer service with a problem. Find out how they deal with it, and if you have a positive experience then that is the program for you. You never want to affiliate with a company who treats their customers poorly or your audience will resent you for it.

Choose affiliate program ads that closely match your website?s niche. Products that are inconsistent with your market are more likely to be ignored and can reduce your site?s credibility such that readers won?t return. If you have a website endorsing animal rights and opposing animal cruelty, would you promote hunting rifles and animal traps?

Create a website that appeals to people who can afford the items you?re selling through affiliate marketing. For example, a coupon or freebie website will bring in a crowd that doesn?t like to pay for anything, making it much more difficult to get them to buy any products. A website about fun new techie gadgets will bring you people who have an expendable income and want to spend it on what you?re selling!

Promote only high quality products that you believe in to your customers. If the reader learns that they can trust you, they will be more likely to take your advice on purchasing new products that they don?t know much about. Keeping your product line to only items that you can truly support will keep your customers coming back again and again to your site.

Realize that traffic numbers really do matter. The more viewers get in front of your relevant, properly positioned, nicely-designed affiliate product links, the higher your potential success rate. Building lots of links is great, but you must keep working on bringing new readers to your site in other ways too, such as a Tribe. Check out Facebook?s Tribe Syndication Association.

A great affiliate marketing tip is to not incorporate pop-up windows on your web site. People can?t stand pop-up windows. If visitors notice that your web site contains pop-ups, they?ll be driven away at a rate faster than you can imagine. It?s best to keep everything on one page.

We are all familiar with the concept of affiliate marketing, we just may not understand its formulation. Hopefully, this article has provided you with the basics you need to start your affiliate marketing campaign in as formal or informal a manner as you might like. By following the tips from this article, you are helping to ensure the success of your program.

Climate Control for Conservatories ? ArticleMeembu / Dofollow ...

We?re all aware of the greenhouse effect and how uncomfortable it could hypothetically be. However, conservatories come with great features that ensure liveable, comfortable, pleasant temperatures. Though, you might not realise it, these features come in a range of shapes you are probably quite familiar with.

Blinds
Blinds are simple, often taken for granted additions; however they are one of the most effective additions for those looking to maintain the temperature in a conservatory. They simply block out the heat or can be used to insulate from the cold. As modern conservatories are essentially all glass, they are more susceptible to heat changes than a normal room. That?s why good blinds can really be a worthwhile investment for the modern conservatory design.

Under floor heating
Of course, keeping the conservatory warm can mean having some form of provision of heating and under floor heating allows you that cosy, warm feel underfoot when you require it. You can choose from electric under floor heating or boiler linked under floor heating ? all of which depends on your circumstances and the way your home is currently heated.

Radiators
The radiator is also a great way to heat your home, and is one of the most popular. However they do have to be placed along the walls of the conservatory. This manner of heating often is seen as an eye sore, though some people don?t mind and it?s a completely subjective decision and depends on conservatory shape as well as its style. For example, a traditional conservatory or orangery would benefit more from radiators than a contemporary conservatory would. Radiators, like under floor heating can be either electric or boiler heated and once again this depends on the way the rest of your home is heated.

Air Conditioning
Of course, you can also place an air conditioning unit in your home. These units are becoming quieter and smaller and so more feasible than ever before. They may cost a little more but they provide probably the best way to keep a conservatory at a comfortable temperature. Furthermore, they allow the most control, so whether you prefer cooler temperatures or a cosy feel, you can choose the temperature you like to the nearest degree.

Glass
The sort of glazing and glass you use can also have a significant effect on the level of heat your conservatory holds. Double glazed glass and better can really save a significant amount on your heating bills and manages to insulate the heat levels of your room. Solar glazing helps to keep your conservatory cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Choose from a range of different kinds of glass when choosing your conservatories, depending on your needs and requirements.

Design
The design of the conservatory, number of windows and doors that can be opened and the direction which the conservatory faces also effects the level of coolness or heat your conservatory can hold. This is of course the simplest form of climate control, but also often one of the most effective and that?s why choosing a high end company for your conservatory design pays off and allows you to create one to fit in with your needs and wants.

Breckenridge offers the most comprehensive choice of hardwood conservatory, contemporary extensions and bespoke conservatories in a choice of materials as well as a range of pool enclosures, summer houses and windows & doors.

How A Real Estate Agent Can Help You Buy a ... - Raw Business Law

business_corporate_law_img.jpg

Many banks do deal with buyers directly through their loss mitigation departments, primarily in cases such as short sales, where you place a payment and technically ?buy? a mortgage before the bank forecloses. In other cases, you deal directly with the city or county such as in the case of tax sales.

If you do not have the time to wrangle a deal but do have the money to invest, then a real estate agent that specializes in foreclosures may be the next best bet. In many cases the real estate agent acts as a go-between for the bank. In many cases the agent is very familiar with the properties in the area and can save you a lot of time by narrowing down the search to a home of your specifications. If you are looking to invest, they can help you find good property in good locations without the hassle.

Many real estate agents now work with banks, mortgage lenders or even the city or county itself. Many choose to take a small commission or percentage of the sale. Familiarize yourself with what is legal in your state or area so you know how much a sale should be worth and how much a commission should be worth.

Look for licensed real estate agents or brokers who specialize in the type of sale you are looking for. Many agents have listings on The Association of Real Estate Law Officials online or you can request a copy of their agent production records. A quick Google search can also do the trick. Avoid getting duped by unscrupulous agents who claim to work with the bank and take advantage of homeowners and buyers by procuring or selling false deeds.

So, for example, if you prefer to deal in preforeclosed homes, then your agent should be an expert in these types of homes. Many agents specialize in only one type of sale, since it does take some certification. If you hate dealing with homeowners, especially distressed ones who are resentful of selling their home, your agent can act as a mediator, help set up meetings or put you in touch with someone who can help.

If you are unfamiliar with the legal processes in your state, a real estate agent can help you navigate the ins and outs of acquiring foreclosed properties. This way you can easily avoid fines or sale revocations. This can also help you go through eviction processes, if you need a little extra legal help.

Another thing to remember when dealing with real estate agents is that, depending on the state, they are not required to provide insurance, conduct home inspections for you or provide legal services. A lawyer specializing in real estate taxes or foreclosures may be your best bet if that is the issue at hand. For home inspections, you can conduct a DIY inspection or hire someone to look at the integrity of the home for you.

Working with a real estate agent can help you protect your investment, make the best investment and prevent you from making costly mistakes, especially if you are new at the investing business.

College Students Flock In, Nest in Dorm Rooms

Christina Mungo, left, and Cecily Hooker get help from friend David Nieves on Saturday as they move into their dorm room on the campus of Southeastern University in Lakeland.

Last Modified: Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 9:55 p.m.

LAKELAND | The invasion of the college student has begun.

Dormitories and other types of housing were being occupied over the weekend by students ready to begin or resume college educations. A poll of local universities shows there is no shortage of students this fall, and enrollment has gone up for most.

At Southeastern University, students from all 50 states and 44 countries are taking over the campus for the fall semester.

"It's funny, because when you think of Lakeland, I don't think most people think of it having that kind of diversity. But we are probably one of the most culturally diverse places in one location." said Brian C. Carroll, Vice President for University Advancement at Southeastern University.

Students were moving into on-campus housing on Saturday at the faith-based college, where enrollment is expected to be slightly over 2,700 for fall. Total enrollment is up by about 100 students from last year, said spokeswoman Dana Davis.

Florida Southern College students were also moving in Saturday. Planned activities for the weekend included campus tours, orientation meetings and an opening convocation. Classes for Florida Southern's 128th academic year begin Wednesday.

The faith-based, private college expects 550 freshmen, and a total enrollment of 2,450. Students will represent 41 states and territories, and 4 percent are international students from 13 countries.

President Anne Kerr said in a prepared statement, "The start of a college career is a time of major transition for young people and their families. I am delighted that so many talented students have selected Florida Southern as their college of choice."

New and returning students will find a few campus changes, including a large green space called "Mr. George's Green,' which will open formally Aug. 25. It's named after the late George Jenkins. There is also a new Wynee Warden Tennis Center, to be dedicated on Sept. 14.

Polk State College spokeswoman Rachel Pleasant said fall enrollment has reached a new high at 11,511, which is 3.6 percent higher than last year.

One area of growth is the 927 students who have enrolled in Polk State's recently added bachelor of applied science and bachelor of science in nursing degree programs. Those enrollments are almost double over last year's and the highest number since the college began offering the degrees.

New this fall at Polk State will be availability of course work toward a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.

At Warner University in Lake Wales, a private, faith-based college, officials report they are expecting record-breaking enrollment. Dawn Rafool, vice president for enrollment management and marketing, said about 1,100 to 1,200 students are expected. Housing is at full capacity.

"We currently have a waiting list for housing," Rafool said.

Classes for traditional students will start Wednesday, and weekend, evening, online and graduate classes begin the following week.

The school is excited about the start of a new football program, and an agricultural degree program that will begin 2013. Competition for football starts the fall of 2013.

Webber international University in Babson Park is gearing up for fall, but classes will not start until Sept. 3, said Keith Wade, president of the faith-based school. Enrollment at the private, faith-based school is projected to be about 675 for the fall for traditional, full-time undergraduates who live in dorms, he said. The university will offer its first classes in elementary education this year.

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) on Sunday chided Vice President Joe Biden for his remark that Republican repeal of Wall Street reform would put voters "back in chains."

"I think it was an indelicate play on the Republican words of shackling the economy with regulations and shackling small businesses," O'Malley said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "It was certainly an indelicate choice of words."

O'Malley, the current chair of the Democratic Governors Association, was one of several guests on the Sunday show circuit to discuss Biden's comments.

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter, appearing on CNN's "State of the Union," called the "faux outrage" against Biden "hypocritical."

"Let's look at what the vice president actually said," she said. "Speaker Boehner, even Paul Ryan have been traveling this country talking about the need to unshackle the private sector, unshackle the financial industry and the vice president was just taking that metaphor a step further and talking about wanting to put other people in shackles, and the word he used -- chains -- is a distraction from the larger argument ? that we shouldn't deregulate Wall Street ... that's the point the vice president was making."

Biden made the comments at a campaign stop in Danville, Va., on Tuesday while stating that Republicans want to deregulate financial institutions.

President Barack Obama has already come to his defense, arguing consumers would be in a far worse situation if the GOP succeeded in doing away with financial reforms.

"The truth is that during the course of these campaigns, folks like to get obsessed with how something was phrased even if everybody personally understands that's not how it was meant," Obama said in an interview with People magazine on Wednesday. "That's sort of the nature of modern campaigns and modern coverage of campaigns. But I tell you, when I'm traveling around Iowa, that's not what's on people's minds."
