Mayor Rob Ford's approval rating remains steady

Mayor Rob Ford's approval rating still seems to be bulletproof, according to a new poll.

A Forum Research poll provided exclusively to the Toronto Sun Tuesday found Ford's approval rating is at 46% -- that's little change from a poll last month that pegged the mayor's approval rating at 47%.

However, around 54% of those polled disapprove of the job Ford is doing.

And when it comes to issues that have been in the news lately, the majority of those residents polled Monday agree with Ford's stance -- except for his opposition to safe injection sites.

" The mayor's approval is as high as we've measured it, except right after the election, and he's championing some policies which are popular with Torontonians," Forum president Lorne Bozinoff said in a statement Tuesday. "They may not be big wins, except for the Scarborough subway, but they'll be remembered."

Ford walked out of this month's council meeting heralding a big win when it comes to council supporting extending the Bloor-Danforth line into Scarborough.

That Scarborough subway vote doesn't seem to have caused a bump in his approval rating, but it seems to have helped keep it steady despite Ford being plagued by crack cocaine allegations earlier this year.

According to the Forum poll, Ford's approval rating is high-e st among older residents, poorer residents and Scarborough residents (around 60%). Although Ford lost a fight at council to cut the number of council seats from 44 to 22, the poll found around 58% support slashing council in half, while only 27% were against the idea.

Most residents polled (55%) now agree with Ford that the land transfer tax should be reduced by 10% rather than cancelling it entirely.

Around 45% want to cut the tax outright, while 41% think eliminating the land transfer tax is a bad idea.

Ford rolled out a city pilot project last week to paint curbs red in an effort to tell drivers where not to park.

The poll found 74% of residents like the red curb idea. Around 16% disapproved of the red curb idea and 10% didn't know.

Around 51% of Toronto residents approve of the idea of a safe injection site in downtown Toronto.

While Ford has balked at the idea, only 36% of those polled disapproved and 13% had no opinion.

The poll also found around 86% of those polled think the city's tattoo parlours should be licensed -- just 5% disagreed with the idea and 9% said they had no opinion.

The poll was an interactive voice response phone survey of 1,368 residents.

Forum considers the results accurate plus or minus 3%, 19 times out of 20.

Ford To Enter 2014 Dakar Rally With Mustang-Powered Ranger Pickup

Custom Ford Ranger to be entered in 2014 Dakar Rally

Custom Ford Ranger to be entered in 2014 Dakar Rally

Ford confirmed it will enter the 2014 Dakar Rally using its latest Ranger pickup truck currently sold overseas. The rally, which once again will be taking place in South America instead of its traditional home in Africa will run from January 5-18 next year.

Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] will enter two Rangers in the arduous rally, but we?re not talking run-of-the-mill Rangers here but highly modified versions complete with 5.0-liter V-8 engines borrowed from the Mustang GT.

The engine has been tuned to deliver more torque at lower revs and offer improved economy, but this has come at the cost of horsepower. Peak output for the engine in the Dakar-contesting Rangers stands at 348 horsepower and 412 pound-feet of torque.

The engine is matched to a Sadev six-speed sequential gearbox and drives all four wheels via a limited-slip differential on both axles. Independent suspension is used at both ends and 16-inch Evocorse wheels shod with 245/85 Michelin feature at each corner.

Despite a body composed of composite materials, the mass of the vehicle is still a hefty 4,300 pounds. Ford claims a top speed of 105 mph.

The purpose-built Rangers are being prepared by South African firm Neil Woolridge Motorsport while logistics will be handled by Germany?s South Racing. Similarly, the driver lineup is made up of international contenders. Among the driver lineup will be Lucio Alvarez and Ronnie Graue in the first Ranger and Chris Visser and Japie Badenhorst in the second vehicle.

The 2014 Dakar Rally is sure to be as trying as ever. The event will start in Rosario, Argentina on January 5 and finish in Valparaiso, Chile on January 18 after thirteen stages of competition, which will comprise a total distance of over 5,200 miles. New to the rally will be a visit to Bolivia.

Mummified Inca child sacrifice gives up her secrets

Sitting cross-legged, a Mona Lisa half-smile playing on her lips, the Llullaillaco Maiden looks at peace. When she was unearthed in 1999, the lump of coca in her teeth and her icy mountaintop tomb were the only clues that she was part of an Inca child sacrifice ritual 500 years ago.

Now the latest studies of her perfectly preserved body offer an unprecedented glimpse into her life in the months leading up to her death ? possibly from hypothermia ? and raise questions about the extent to which she was aware of, and accepted, the fate that had been mapped out for her.

The frozen body of the 13-year-old Maiden was entombed in a small chamber 1.5 metres underground near the summit of Volc?n Llullaillaco in Argentina, together with the bodies of two 4 or 5-year-olds. With the blood still visible in their hearts and their lungs inflated, the three are probably the best-preserved mummies anywhere in the world, says Andrew Wilson at the University of Bradford in the UK. "They look very recognisable as individuals, which adds to the poignancy of their story."

The children were the centrepiece of an elaborate capacocha ritual ? the Inca practice of child sacrifice used to mark important events in the emperor's life. What we know about the ritual comes from 17th-century Spanish accounts, but they reveal little from the children's perspective. The mummies, in particular that of the Maiden, help fill that gap.

Timeline in hair

"She has fantastically tightly braided hair, which effectively acts as a timeline stretching back almost two years before her death," says Wilson. With colleagues, he has analysed how chemical traces in the hair differ from root to tip. The results show the Maiden experienced important dietary changes in those final two years.

Around 12 months before her death, for instance, the Maiden's diet changed markedly from simple to much richer food ? perhaps indicating the moment that she was plucked from humble surroundings and elevated to a higher status as someone chosen for sacrifice.

The chemical markers also show she consumed large quantities of alcohol and coca ? from which cocaine is extracted ? in the final months of her life. Her coca use peaked when she had six months to live, possibly coinciding with a hair-cutting ritual she underwent at the time. The final six weeks of her life, meanwhile, were marked by her consuming more alcohol than usual. This was not seen in the two younger children sacrificed alongside her, who almost certainly both played some subordinate "attendant" role in the capacocha ritual.

This difference intrigued Wilson and his colleagues, who speculate that it may reflect a greater need to sedate the Maiden as the capacocha ritual approached.

Coping mechanism

It's certainly a possibility, says John Verano at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. "We can only hypothesise, but being older, she might have had more of an idea of what was going on around her," he says. And although she may have considered her imminent death an honour ? as we know the Inca were encouraged to do ? it may equally have caused her anxiety. "Was she nervous and using drink as a way to deal with it?" asks Verano.

However, Verano points out that the Maiden's increased intake of alcohol may simply reflect her involvement in more rituals before the capacocha ? maize beer being an important component of Inca ceremonies.

Charles Stanish at the University of California, Los Angeles, offers another interpretation: rather than the alcohol and drugs being used to sedate the Maiden to make it easier for her carers to manipulate her, they might have been for her benefit ? to numb her to her fate. "Some would say that within this cultural context, this was a humane action," he says.

There may be a way to throw more light on the issue, says Verano. Hair also contains the stress hormone cortisol, so it should hold clues to the Maiden's stress levels. "If [cortisol] also increased towards the end of her life, that would certainly be interesting," he says.

Tough fight ahead for Ore. GOP governor contender

The Associated Press

A Republican state representative is getting an early start in his bid to be Oregon's next governor. But if history is a guide, then Dennis Richardson has a challenging road ahead.

No one younger than 27 has lived in Oregon under a Republican governor, and it's been more than a decade since a GOP candidate was elected to statewide office. Even in 2010, the best year in memory for Republicans, the tea-party fueled conservative wave crashed short of Oregon.

"People are ready for a change," Richardson said last week after announcing his run for governor. "They want a plan that they can believe in."

Richardson represents Central Point and is largely unknown outside southern Oregon except to those who follow the Legislature closely.

Among his challenges will be introducing himself to the electorate and convincing Portland-area voters to give a conservative a chance. Democrats have been able to make up for weaknesses in the rural areas of Oregon by running up strong margins in Portland and its suburbs.

All of that will take a lot of money. Chris Dudley, the 2010 Republican nominee, spent more than $10 million in his losing bid, much of it his own money.

"There are always two races. The first race is about the money, and the second race is about the votes," said Greg Leo, a lobbyist and former chief staffer at the Oregon Republican Party. "We'll see what happens on the fundraising, which now starts in earnest."

Richardson also faces a Republican primary. Eastern Oregon rancher Jon Justesen is seeking the GOP nomination, and other Republicans also could jump in.

"I'm announcing now so that other Republican candidates might have the idea that, 'Well, if Richardson's willing to do this, we'll support him rather than getting into a highly contested primary,'" Richardson said. "If one comes, that's the way the system works, I'm happy to work with that, it gives us practice for the general election."

The biggest factor that will determine the course of the governor's race, however, is the decision of the current governor about whether to run. Kitzhaber has said he's still making up his mind about whether to run and will announce his decision in the fall.

After three terms in the governor's office ? the first two from 1995 to 2003 ? Kitzhaber is a well-known figure in Oregon. He's carved out socially liberal and fiscally moderate positions, sometimes angering the left.

Asked about Richardson at a press conference Thursday, Kitzhaber said the Republican was "a very solid partner" in the 2011 and 2012 legislative sessions, which he called "extraordinarily bipartisan and productive."

"I welcome anyone who wants to seek higher office in this state," Kitzhaber said. "I have not made a decision about my own political future, but I wish Rep. Richardson well."

Richardson, 62, grew up in Los Angeles and flew helicopters for the Army in Vietnam. He settled in Southern Oregon in 1979, was first elected to the Legislature in 2002 and rose to be the co-chairman of the Ways and Means Committee when Republicans shared power with Democrats after the 2010 election.

"By and large, I think he's got a very, very low profile," said Len Bergstein, a lobbyist and former Democratic political consultant. "I haven't see any polls, but I think he doesn't come anywhere near challenging Kitzhaber in public awareness, perception, reputation."

(AP) ? "The Wolverine" slashed monsters and minions to debut atop the weekend box office.

The Fox film featuring Hugh Jackman's sixth turn as the claw-wielding superhero opened with $55 million in North America, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Last weekend's top movie, Warner Bros.' low-budget horror "The Conjuring," slipped to second place, adding another $22.1 million to its take.

"Despicable Me 2" was in third with $16 million. The Universal animated sequel, with its cast of cute, yellow minions, has made more than $600 million worldwide since it came out four weeks ago.

"The Wolverine," which is set in Japan and features an international cast, earned another $86.1 million overseas. The film's opening-week take surpassed the $120 million it cost to make, said Chris Aronson, Fox's head of domestic distribution.

"It's a huge opening for the clawed one," he said. "It played equally well from Maine to Maui."

Another Fox film, the animated snail-racing tale "Turbo," was in fourth place with $13.3 million. Adam Sandler's "Grown Ups 2" followed with $11.5 million.

Woody Allen's latest, "Blue Jasmine," enjoyed a stellar opening of its own, though on a much smaller scale. Starring Cate Blanchett, the film opened in just six theaters but still collected $612,767.

"It's one of the biggest opening per-theater averages ever for a non-animated film," said Paul Dergarabedian of box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Ticket sales this weekend were up almost 30 percent over the same weekend last summer, he said.

"It was a good weekend to be a moviegoer because the choices just got a lot more interesting," Dergarabedian said, noting a mix that includes animated, independent and big-budget action offerings.

"Fruitvale Station," the Sundance winner already generating Oscar buzz, expanded to theaters across the country and edged its way into the top 10, contributing to a summer box office that is up more than 10 percent over last year.

Little sign of economic stress in North Korea's well-swept capital

By Se Young Lee

PYONGYANG (Reuters) - North Korea's economy is believed to be virtually lifeless after decades of mismanagement, isolation and sanctions aimed at foiling its nuclear ambitions but its showcase capital, Pyongyang, shows no hint of calamity.

Secretive North Korea allowed in a large group of foreign journalists last week to cover Saturday's lavish celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the truce that ended the 1950-53 Korean War, which North Korea says it won.

No expense seems to have been spared for monuments to the conflict upon which the state was founded.

A cemetery for war dead unveiled at a ceremony on Thursday, that leader Kim Jong-un presided over, looked immaculate, with grave stones bearing portraits of the dead and images of the medals they won.

A new war museum, opened to the public with much fanfare on Saturday, boasts top-of-the line television displays and elaborate recreations of battle sites.

A big statue of North Korea's founding father, Kim Il-sung, grandfather of the current leader, looms over visitors to the museum dedicated to the war South Koreans blame the elder Kim for starting.

North Korean visitors took pictures with Japanese digital cameras.

Government minders closely chaperoned the foreign journalists throughout their stay and the visitors largely had to rely on glimpses of Pyongyang from the press bus to get an impression of life.

There is no hint of the numbing poverty, hunger and repression that North Korean defectors say define life in the countryside.

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency says in its global fact book that North Korea's annual per capita income was $1,800 in 2011, in purchasing power terms, the 197th in the world and about 5.5 percent that of South Korea.

A famine in the 1990s is estimated to have killed a million people. More than one-quarter of children are chronically malnourished, according to a U.N.-backed survey published in March.

But none of that is evident in Pyongyang.

OLD CARS, LITTLE SHOPS

Residents, by definition regime loyalists because the government decides who can live there, rely on a rusting cable car system to get around. Long lines of people pack in at busy times of day.

People walk a lot along the largely empty, well-swept streets. In recent days, women held up parasols of different colors to shade themselves from the summer sun.

Most cars are old European or Japanese models but there are some newer ones including Toyota Land Cruisers, and Mercedes-Benz and Audi sedans.

Perhaps surprisingly, a lot of little shops are scattered across the city, in particular book and clothing stores. There are also restaurants and tiny shops selling nothing but locally produced soft drinks, in apple, grape and peach flavors.

Many people were sitting relaxing in the shade in squares and along sidewalks. Some chatted on mobile phones.

Apartment blocks may look a bit run-down, just as in many other Asian cities, but many residents had flower pots on their balconies.

It is after sunset that North Korea's economic difficulties are more evident.

Large parts of Pyongyang have no street lights, and apparently a patchy electricity supply. Specks of light floating in the darkness look like fireflies, but prove to be bicycle lamps.

It goes without saying in the capital of one of the world's most tightly controlled countries that there is no hint of any unrest or frustration with the regime led by the 30-year-old Kim.

"He has been in place for more than a year and a half now; we see no sign of any dissent or opposition or internal discomfort over his position as leader," one diplomat said of the young leader.

While Kim has been more visible, especially over the past week when he looked confident and relaxed presiding over the anniversary celebrations, there is no indication of any change in the policies set by his father and grandfather.

"There's been a change in style, but not substance," said the diplomat, who declined to be identified.

Catholics hear pope's call to shake up church

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? In the thick of his historic visit to Brazil this week, Pope Francis urged young Catholics to make a "mess" in their dioceses and break out of their spiritual cages.

Francis' exhortation during a special meeting with Argentine faithful on Thursday, won him acclaim as a renegade leader of the world's biggest church. But it also left many of his followers with their own interpretations of the pontiff's words about the need to shake up the church.

Some said they thought Francis wanted them to object more forcefully when taught ideas that clash with church doctrine. Others said it meant hitting the streets and pushing for social change.

"If in my biology class they speak about abortion, I should raise my hand and say I don't believe in that," said Maria Alejandrina de Dicindio, a 54-year-old Argentine catechism teacher who had traveled to Rio to see her pope, a fellow Argentine. "The youth should open their mouths when it's their turn."

For Mexican pilgrim Gilberto Amado Hernandez, the pope's message meant he should start showing the world Jesus Christ's message of love.

"It's difficult to meet young people who want to get close to Christ," Amado said. "We have to show them that faith is something beautiful."

Francis himself didn't specify what to do, but he has displayed his own mold-breaking ways throughout this week's visit to Rio de Janeiro and rural Sao Paulo state, his first overseas trip as pope.

The first pontiff from the Americas worried security officials by riding through massive crowds atop an open-sided popemobile rather than the fully enclosed, bulletproof vehicle his last two predecessors used. He's also ventured straight up to well-wishers to kiss babies and bless children and met privately Friday with juvenile offenders.

While speaking to his fellow Argentines Thursday, Francis said Catholics should make a concerted effort to get outside their own worlds.

"I want to see the church get closer to the people," he told them. "I want to get rid of clericalism, the mundane, this closing ourselves off within ourselves, in our parishes, schools or structures, because these need to get out."

His final message: "Don't forget: make trouble."

In his own way, he lived those words as the archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, before being selected as pope in March.

Then known as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the future pope largely abandoned the kinds of luxuries favored by other high-ranking church officials. He rented out the archbishop's luxurious suburban mansion, living instead in a spartan room in a downtown church office building. He also rode subways and buses around town rather than keep a chauffeur.

Francis' visit to a Rio slum on Thursday wasn't his first such venture. He made regular unescorted trips to dangerous slums as archbishop and saw to it that every major "misery village" in Buenos Aires had a chapel and a priest to spread the Lord's word.

He also encouraged young people and the laity to take on leadership roles in parishes that were previously held by priests, so that church members would have much more say in what happens in their communities. Though the Catholic Church openly supported Argentina's 1976-1983 dictatorship, Francis later approved sainthood investigations for priests who were killed by the military government.

Yet biographer Sergio Rubin said Francis the archbishop also had a very keen sense of politics and took care to act prudently, choosing his battles and avoiding challenging superiors in ways that would backfire.

He wasn't so gleeful and devoted to the crowd, seemingly mindful that he didn't yet have the power to make a big splash in the church, according to an Argentine Catholic official who asked not to be identified because he wasn't authorized to talk publicly about church politics.

Instead, Francis molded the church in Argentina in quieter ways by recruiting and promoting a new generation of outgoing priests in his own model, and not only fellow Jesuits used to living among lay people.

His replacement as archbishop, Mario Poli, had impressed Bergoglio by earning a degree in social work from the public University of Buenos Aires. In a book of dialogues with a friendly rabbi, Francis said, "This is a much better situation, because in the (university) you become acquainted with real life, the different points of view there are about it, the different scientific aspects, cosmopolitanism. . It's a way of having your feet well planted in the earth."

The shake-up message is also one he's applying as pope to the Vatican's staid and dysfunctional bureaucracy. Francis has made clear that big change is on the way, naming commissions of inquiry to investigate the scandals at the Vatican bank and propose an overarching reform of the entire central governance of the Catholic Church.

The pontiff has dived into crowds that have greeted him at the Vatican and in Brazil.

During two raucous rides down Copacabana beach, he's waved, smiled and stopped repeatedly to accept gifts thrown at him from the crowd. At one point, Francis gave away his own white skullcap and put on another one tossed in from the street.

For Argentine student Ana Paula Garrote, Francis was showing Catholics they needed to live that type of spirit.

"For me, the pope wanted to say that we should go out into the streets, not stay in the parishes, and not be ashamed of talking about God," Garrote said.

DNP 12K gaming brings frame rates and resolution to OMFGlevels

Think your gaming rig's impressive because it can run Metro: Last Light with maxed out settings at 60FPS? Well, Microsoft rounded up a trio of Sharp PN-K321 32-inch 4K monitors and wired them to a Windows 8 PC stuffed with three ASUS 7970 GPUs. The $17,000 experiment proved two things: Such tech is outside our price-range, and it takes a huge amount of support to get it working. For instance, before AMD wrote custom drivers to make Eyefinity and multi-stream transport play nicely together, the framerate was a meager 8FPS. It's worth noting that even after all that, demos only lasted a few minutes before the computer's power supply would conk out -- but maybe the kinks will be fixed in time for us to play Battlefield Bad Company 5 on it.

Florida coach Will Muschamp goads Ohio State at SEC media days about NCAA violations

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The media days for the SEC are considered among the great circuses in college sports. Today, Ohio State was pulled into the tent.

Florida coach Will Muschamp referenced the Buckeyes, but didn't actually use the phrase ?Ohio State,? according to numerous reporters in attendance who put the remarks on Twitter. His comments were in regards to recent reports of Urban Meyer reporting Florida for a potential minor NCAA violation. Meyer denied he did it, but Ohio State later confirmed a team staffer read about a possible Florida misstep and alerted the NCAA.

?We appreciate our friends from Ohio making sure we follow NCAA rules,? Muschamp said, according to Sports Illustrated reporter Andy Staples, among others. ?They certainly know something about NCAA rules.?

Additionally, Muschamp also may have taken a page from the Brady Hoke playbook. Another media member's report on Twitter has Muschamp calling the Buckeyes "Ohio."

Maybe we should consider this the official start of football season.

They certainly know something about NCAA rules? It's understandable Muschamp is upset about Ohio State reporting Florida. But not every coach would have thrown in a remark about the Buckeyes' NCAA violations that were committed before Urban Meyer got to campus.

Sporting News on Muschamp-Meyer

Verbal sparring in July gets you ready for kickoff, doesn't it?

Meyer will have his chance to respond to the response when the Big Ten holds its media days in Chicago next Wednesday and Thursday. Certainly he'll be asked about it, just as Muschamp was asked about it today.

Everyone knows Ohio State will never have a rival like Michigan. But between Florida and Alabama, the Buckeyes have some new friends in the SEC. And it sure would be interesting to see them hash this out on the field.

Claire is the founder of the ?STRIDE? (specialised training in diet and exercise) programme. This is a 24-week, weight management programme aimed at 13-14 year old teenagers who are de-motivated/dis-engaged from regular P.E sessions. The teenagers are offered a lifestyle and fitness appraisal week one, twelve and twenty four, where various measurements are taken, so evaluation of the programme can take place. The groups then participate in an ?alternative P.E? programme that focuses on individual activities to improve and increase self-esteem, self-confidence and improved body image. Alongside the alternative P.E sessions, the groups are given 12-weeks free membership to a local leisure centre and encouraged to use the passes outside of school hours, thus increasing their weekly daily activity patterns and offering them an opportunity that due to financial barriers they may not have access to normally. The programme has been so successful within the area and has received outstanding results. One of the chosen and most popular activities in the programme was Pilates.?

Pilates for Children

?

?Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. In order to achieve happiness, it is imperative to gain mastery of your body. If at the age of 30 you are stiff and out of shape, you are old. If at 60 you are supple and strong then you are young.?? Joseph Pilates

The prevalence of obesity in England has more than tripled in the last 25 years. The latest Health Survey for England (HSE) data shows that in England in 2010:

?62.8% of adults (aged 16 or over) were overweight or obese

?30.3% of children (aged 2-15) were overweight or obese

?26.1% of all adults and 16% of all children were obese

Type 2 diabetes in children (and teenagers) has increased radically in a short time; the culprit for the rise is said to be an increase in obesity in our youth. Regrettably, overweight children have a higher risk for increased mortality later in life, and obesity can decrease a person?s lifespan by nine years 1 ??. Overweight and obese children may face higher risks of health concerns later in adulthood, such as bowel cancer, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes1. Children and adults who are above a healthy weight are much more likely to develop chronic diseases. The psychological, physical, and economic burden of rising levels of chronic disease is now one of the major challenge facing western societies2.

How Pilates can help

Pilates is a low-impact method of exercise and may offer some hope in combating obesity in our youth.? The essential concept of Pilates? philosophy is strengthening the core (powerhouse) of the body. In particular, young children and teenagers can benefit, since Pilates promotes physical activity, improved body image and increased self-esteem. The combination of Pilates alongside a well-planned weight management programme, could lead to great results and be a step closer to overcoming the obesity epidemic.

In support of this statement, a study by Jargo et al (2006) revealed that, ?Girls enjoyed Pilates, and participation for four weeks lowered BMI percentile?3.

Pilates has also been shown to increase enjoyment and participation in exercise for children. (Ickes 2005, Jago 2005)

Many adults have developed faulty movement patterns in their body from lack of awareness, which leads to abnormal firing patterns and poor habitual posture. One benefit of Pilates for kids is developing this body awareness at a young age so that, as they get older, they can ward off the pain and lack of stability and mobility that comes with habitual poor posture.

Pilates fitness is a great way for kids to enhance physical fitness, promote good posture, spinal flexibility and body awareness. When combined with team building exercises, Pilates develops a child who is confident, aware and sensitive to others.

Pilates is known to provide a wider variety of benefits that include;

?

???? Weight Management;

???? Flexibility;

???? Coordination;

???? Balance;

???? Personal body image;

???? Concentration;

???? Self-Esteem;

???? Joint Mobility.

?

Claire?s Top Tips to running a successful Pilates class for teenagers.

?

1. Keep classes small

Limit classes to approximately 10-12 students. This is crucial if working with younger children. This will enable you to give them individual attention and to be able to keep the group focused.

?

2. ?Keep it fun!

Teaching children is much different than teaching adults. It is important to help them focus and understand the benefits of Pilates and at the same time make Pilates fun. Teenagers may respond well if you inform them of the traditional exercise, and as a group develop a ?new/fashionable? term for each move. For example, the ? Boomerang? may become the? ?Kate Perry? move. Younger children may respond to moves with animal names. Using equipment such as soft balls or Beams can make the class not only more challenging but also more fun.

?

3.? To modify or not?

Even though children are different than adults, the fundamentals of teaching Pilates are still the same. Just like with adults, some children are stronger, or more flexible than others. It?s the basic things that you?ve learned as an instructor?you use those same principles with children. It might be an idea to begin with a basic fitness test to assess what level the children are at. Simple tests such as a stand on one leg balance test or a sit and reach test, or a reaction ball test may give you a good indication as to how strong/flexible or coordinated a child is.

It is just as important to give modified versions to children, as it is adults. Teaching inversion style moves may be more suitable for 1-2-1 training and not for groups.

?

4. Talk about all the benefits of fitness

The emphasis needs to steer away from weight management and lean more towards focusing on the other benefits of Pilates and fitness in general: centering, concentration, posture, alignment, flexibility. Children often want to become more flexible, they want to be stronger, they want to be like whichever athlete or pop star they idolise.? So be aware of whose hot and who?s not. 2012 has been a great year for relating health and fitness and being stronger and more supple to all the great athletes we?ve seen in the Olympics, but it?s also a good idea to stress how it will help them with their studies and stress levels.

?

5. Let the kids teach each other

The actual flow or format of a class with children may differ slightly from an adult based class. Demonstration of an exercise from the instructor and then class participation seems to work very well. The instructor may deliver 6-7 Pilates moves in a session and then ask the group to split into small groups and choose 2-3 of their favourite exercises and deliver them to the rest of the group. It?s a great way for children to learn from their peers because they?re so impressionable on each other. Older children could learn how to sequence moves and how to flow smoothly from one move to the next.

?

6. Use language children can relate to

Younger children have little idea what the core is. Children may however, understand the belly button-to-spine connection . So words such as ?Pull your belly button in? or ?Bring your belly button to your back? work very well. Always be aware you?re not losing them in too much technical jargon and that you?re not ?talking to them? too much. Keep the class fun and interactive.

Coronavirus is not global emergency: WHO committee

GENEVA (Reuters) - The Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS) is not a "public health emergency of international concern", the emergency committee of the World Health Organization said on Wednesday.

Its 15 international experts issued a unanimous decision after hearing reports from authorities in Saudi Arabia and other countries affected by the deadly SARS-like virus that has infected 82 people and killed 45 of them since April 2012.

"Based on these views and the currently available information, the (WHO) Director-General (Margaret Chan) accepted the Committee's assessment that the current MERS-CoV situation is serious and of great concern, but does not constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern at this time," the WHO said in a statement issued in Geneva.

The health experts began urgent talks on MERS on July 9 amid concerns about larger numbers of milder infections possibly going undetected.

The committee, which held its second private teleconference on Wednesday, can make recommendations on travel and trade, disease surveillance, as well as the exchange of data.

Cases have also been found in Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Britain, France, Italy and Germany.

Millions are expected to travel to Mecca in October for the haj pilgrimage, but Saudi authorities have cut the number of visas this year, citing safety concerns over expansion work at the main mosque site.

Critics question how next UC president was chosen

The nomination of Janet Napolitano, the U.S. secretary of Homeland Security and former governor of Arizona, to be UC president has elicited many positive comments about how her managerial and political skills can help the university system. But some skeptics are voicing concerns about her lack of education administrative credentials and question the secretive process that led to her selection.

Her nomination was approved by a 10-member committee of UC regents and remained a tight secret until it was announced Friday, without the chance for advance public comment. The UC regents will vote on her nomination Thursday in public session but approval is thought to be a done deal.

In contrast, in some other states, the search for university presidents is more open and finalists' names are released well in advance, although some experts say that scares away some good candidates.

The Daily Bruin, UCLA?s student newspaper, tackled that issue of transparency in an editorial and urged the 10-campus UC system to explain how Napolitano came to be chosen in a process that, it contends, has ?left the public and the UC community in the dark throughout the search.?

The newspaper urged ?university administrators to provide further explanation of how they picked an individual with no experience in California politics and no familiarity with its public universities. We hope the regents will also make public the names of other finalists for the position and will explain, in detail, the intent behind their decision and the specific qualities they believe make Napolitano the best fit for the UC.?

UC spokesman Steve Montiel said the process followed state rules that allow for closed discussions about such personnel matters. He said that many top candidates would not want to be considered for the job if the names under consideration were publicly revealed and then all but one rejected.

?It?s all a matter of best practices for doing a search,? he said. ?It?s all about trying to get the best people you can.? ?He emphasized that advisory groups of students, alumni, faculty and others gave input on the qualifications they saw as important for a UC president.?

Christopher Newfield, a UC Santa Barbara professor of literature and American studies, is worried that Napolitano ?has no experience with university life or management and no known body of organized thought on the subject.?

?It is not easy to make up for this. Being a political heavyweight is not a qualification for being a university president. Earning President Obama?s trust is not a qualification,? Newfield, who has been a past critic of UC policies, wrote in his blog Remaking the University.

Newfield also said that Napolitano?s Homeland Security experience is a bad matches for academia: ?Universities are the opposite of detention centers. The security function is the opposite of teaching and research. Universities are about discovery, which generally involves ignoring or breaking conceptual rules rather than enforcing them. Universities are about learning, which requires openness, flexibility, freedom and placing fanatical priority on human development, all of which is the opposite of border control, surveillance and deportation.?

UC officials said last week that Napolitano ? the first woman nominated to head UC ? was a nontraditional selection but that her experience as governor and in running the huge and highly complex Cabinet department would serve her well at the university and in seeking funding in Sacramento and Washington.

Her familiarity with federal funding and security issues would help at the energy and weapons labs UC runs for the federal government, they added. ? ??

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Huawei Ascend Mate: which is the best business smartphone?

Both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Huawei Ascend Mate have grabbed a lot of attention reecently. Samsung's new flagship handset takes last year's exceptionally popular Galaxy S3,?tweaks its appearance slightly, and adds oodles of hands-free features. Meanwhile, Huawei has come up with a massive phone ? or a teeny tablet ? in the Ascend Mate. Business users might look at it and think it can combine the best of the phone and tablet worlds.

The Galaxy S4 and Ascend Mate are rather differently priced. As I write, the latter comes in at around ?350, while the former retails in the region of an eye-watering ?550. If you are shopping on price alone, then, you have a clear winner. But how do all the other features stack up?

Platform?

Huawei initially made its name producing lower cost handsets for network operators. Since striking out on its own, it has started to cover all levels of the spectrum and the Ascend Mate is an entrant in a small but growing category of device which some call 'phablets.'

There's nothing about the Ascend Mate that will lock you into it for ever. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ? not quite at the cutting edge but close enough not to cause bother. Android is not too heavily mucked around with, but where there are alterations, they tend to be for the good. The massive 6.1in screen benefits from a 'one handed navigation' system that lets you push certain aspects closer to one long edge. You can squish the portrait view keyboard to one side, for example, allowing for easy thumb tapping. Most of us would struggle one handed if this were not the case.

Huawei also delights with a range of pop-up apps that might appeal to business users. There's a calculator and note-taker, for example, which could be handy several times in any day.

By contrast, Samsung ships the Galaxy S4 with Android 4.2, making it bang up to date. Samsung has a tradition of providing its own features, brought together under the heading TouchWiz, to its devices. In its present incarnation, TouchWiz is not so much about altering the look and feel of Android significantly as it is about layering an array of extras on top of it that might simply overwhelm some people.

There are plenty of fancy features, from using the front camera to stop video playback if you look away from the screen, to allowing for two apps to run at the same time. The number of apps that can run simultaneously is small but the 5in screen means it could be useful at times. You can view a web page and make notes about it at the same time, for example. This is one feature that might appeal to the professional user.

Security

It's not unusual to see besuited types using smartphones these days and the Samsung Galaxy S4 is no exception. If you are prepared to sign up for a Samsung account, you can access remote ring, remote wipe and remote lock functions, and can locate your handset on a map too. But the handset has launched without Samsung's Knox features activated. That's a pity for higher-end business users, as Knox is effectively a 'sandbox' which allows separation of work and personal data and lets companies access handsets remotely.

By way of contrast, the Huawei Ascend Mate is unashamedly free of high-end corporate security features. It complies with all the standard Android security features, such as PIN-based login, and it also supports Microsoft Exchange policies like remote wipe and PIN lock enforcement. But because Huawei is not specifically targeting the business sector, you won't find heavy duty support in this area.

Connectivity

There's little to distinguish the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Huawei Ascend Mate in terms of the connectivity features - except of course for the headline fact that the Galaxy S4 is a 4G LTE handset and the Ascend Mate isn't.

Beyond that, the Ascend Mate features Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, and the ability to act as a Wi-Fi hotspot, plus Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a bit more going on, offering 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and MHL 2.0. Samsung also throws in Near Field Communications support and its own S Beam app that uses NFC and Wi-Fi Direct to share data between two supporting Samsung devices.

Design and build quality

The Huawei Ascend Mate is tough and solid. It feels as though it should survive a few tumbles down concrete stairs and the tussle of life in a rucksack. By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S4 has been noted as having a somewhat flimsy backplate, and while both have plastic chassis designs, the S4 feels the more flimsy in the hands. Of course, both feature Gorilla Glass screens, giving them added protection against the likes of keys and pens, which might scratch a handset screen.

Price, availability and opinion

Both handsets are available now SIM-free, though at rather different prices. As noted at the start of this article, SIM-free the Huawei Ascend Mate is around ?350 while the Galaxy S4 sells for around ?550.

The Galaxy S4's 5in, 1920 x 1080 pixel screen is large, but appears tiny compared to the Ascend Mate's 6.1in, 1280 x 720 pixel offering - take note that the smaller screen actually packs a higher resolution. There is an obvious price to pay in terms of portability for the Mate, and while you can hold it to your ear to take voice calls, trust us when we say it does feel a bit peculiar to do so.

If you currently deploy both tablets and smartphones in your business, you might want to consider whether the Huawei Ascend Mate can provide the best of both worlds ? and the answer to that will rather depend on what it is you currently do with your tablets in terms of screen usage. A smaller screen might be good enough and if it is you could save a packet going with the Ascend Mate.

It is also worth noting that the Samsung Galaxy S4 crams in a huge number of features, many of which will be of no interest whatsoever to a business user ? indeed, for the consumer market, too, this handset has been accused by some of being unnecessarily bloated. However, if you really do need high level handset security, Samsung's forthcoming Knox programme might tempt you.
