U.S. farmers to plant the most corn in 75 years

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. farmers will plant the most corn in 75 years to cash in on higher prices, topping expectations at the expense of soybean and spring wheat sowings, according to a U.S. government report on Friday.

The dramatic expansion raised hopes that the next harvest would ease razor-thin supplies that have kept corn prices near historic highs.

The Agriculture Department, in a separate report, said supplies in storage as of March 1 were smaller than expected, making a big crop imperative.

"Going forward, it's going to be all about the planting weather," said Don Roose, president of U.S. Commodities.

Despite the early prospects for a bumper crop, Corn, wheat and soybean futures rose strongly on the surprisingly tight grain stocks. Corn for delivery in May went "limit up," rising by the maximum amount allowed in a day of 40 cents. The climb of 6.6 percent to $6.44 a bushel was the biggest gain for corn since Oct 11.

Soybeans were up 3 percent, to a six-month high of $14.02 a bushel, and wheat was up nearly 8 percent, the biggest increase since Oct 11.

FARMERS GEAR UP FOR BIG YEAR

The farm sector is enjoying a boom that dates from 2006 as food demand rose worldwide and biofuels helped spur crop production. With farm income at record highs, farmers have updated their tillage equipment and built more storage bins, making business for equipment makers like Deere & Co and AGCO Corp, seed companies such as Monsanto Co, bin manufacturers such as Brock Grain Systems, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, and processors such as Archer-Daniels-Midland Co (ADM).

However, grain companies also could make more money by transporting increased volumes of crops around the world. "For a grain trader like Bunge, they make more money from the higher volumes of food that are shipped," he said. Bunge was up 1.7 percent at 68.38, while ADM was up 1.4 percent at 31.7. Deere was up 0.5 percent to 80.90.

MORE CORN IN THE TOP CORN STATE

Another year of full-throttle output is on the horizon. USDA estimates growers will plant the largest area to the eight major field crops -- corn, wheat, rice, cotton, soybeans, sorghum, barley and oats -- since 1998 and up 2 percent from 2011.

In USDA's annual prospective plantings survey, farmers said they would expand corn planting by 4 percent from 2011, which exceeded analyst expectations or 94.72 million acres. Iowa, the No 1 corn state, would plant a record amount of land to corn.

Soybean plantings were projected to fall 1 percent nationwide from last year to 73.9 million acres, increasing concerns about tightening global supplies of the oilseed due to poor harvests in South America. Analysts had expected soy plantings to increase to 75.393 million acres.

"Acreage is expected to shift to corn," the USDA said. In many states, corn offers higher returns than competing crops.

In Iowa, corn planting would be up by 4 percent while soybeans drop 6 percent. Nebraska, No 3 in corn, would expand corn area by 5 percent while trimming soybeans by 4 percent and wheat by 11 percent. Illinois, No 2 in corn and soybeans to Iowa, would boost soybean area by 100,000 acres, or 1 percent, while cutting corn by the same amount.

LARGEST CORN PLANTINGS SINCE 1937

Big corn plantings should replenish a stockpile that is forecast to shrink to its lowest level since 1996 by the Sept 1 end of this marketing year. If farmers stick to their plans, it would be the most corn planted 97.2 million acres in 1937.

USDA estimated farmers will plant 12 million acres of spring wheat other than durum, with a record low number of acres seeded in South Dakota. That is down 3 percent from last year and below the average trade estimate of 13.313 million acres.

USDA's projection for a total wheat planted area of 55.9 million acres was up 3 percent from 2011 but well below the average analyst estimate of 57.422 million acres.

Growers intended to plant 13.2 million acres of cotton, down 11 percent from last year, and 2.56 million acres of rice, down 5 percent, according to the USDA report.

With normal weather and yields, the corn harvest would be a record 14.5 billion bushels, up 10 percent from the mark set in 2009, according to Reuters calculations. Soybeans would total 3.2 billion bushels, the fourth largest on record. The wheat harvest would be 2.1 billion bushels and cotton growers would pick 18 million bales.

TIGHT SUPPLY

The U.S. corn stockpile was down 8 percent from a year ago, the government said, with consumption running faster than traders expected.

In a quarterly report, USDA said there were 6.009 billion bushels of corn in storage on March 1, 2 percent less than traders expected. Some 3.6 billion bushels were consumed during the quarter, equal to 30 percent of the 2011 crop.

Traders estimated consumption would be 4 percent smaller than USDA estimated.

Soybean stocks were estimated by USDA at 1.372 billion bushels, up 10 percent from a year ago but 1 percent smaller than traders expected.

Wheat stocks totaled 1.201 billion bushels, according to USDA, down 16 percent from a year ago and 2 percent less than traders expected.

Pets Used as Pawns in Domestic Violence - Survey | Life With Dogs

One in three women surveyed in a recent groundbreaking New Zealand study reported delaying leaving violent relationships because they feared their pets and other animals would be killed or tortured. Of these, one quarter said their children had witnessed violence against animals.

?Pets as Pawns? was commissioned by the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in partnership with Women?s Refuge. It underlines the strong link between animal cruelty and domestic and family violence in New Zealand. The research also showed that 50% of women interviewed had witnessed animal cruelty as part of their experience of domestic violence.

?This research shows the urgent need for RNZSPCA and Women?s Refuge to work together to find solutions to make families safer by enabling them to leave violent situations with their animals,? says RNZSPCA National Chief Executive Robyn Kippenberger.

?In the past we have had an informal arrangement between some of our regional SPCA?s and Women?s Refuges, and the feedback we were getting from these collaborations led us to commission this research. The research has confirmed the need for Women?s Refuge and the SPCA to work closely together to protect the women and animals who are suffering as a result of domestic violence.?

?Our two organizations have agreed that we will develop a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure communication and cooperation at a local level,? she said.

The study also found that SPCA staff and police needed to better understand the link between animal cruelty and domestic violence. Likewise, Refuge workers needed more support when women with animals needed to leave violent relationships. The study also suggests a funding program should be developed to support animals in temporary accommodation, veterinary expenses and transport to this accommodation.

The research was funded by Lotteries Community Sector Research Fund and took place in 2011. The research included direct interviews with 30 refuge clients who had witnessed or were forced to take part in animal cruelty as part of family violence. SPCA stakeholders were also spoken with.

The latter part of the research involved surveying 203 Women?s Refuge clients. Of these 203 women, 111 (55%) stated that animal cruelty was part of their experience of family violence as, at some point, either a family member or their partner had threatened to kill one of their pets, animals and/or farm animals. One third of the respondents also reported actual injury of death of the animal.

As a result, deciding when and how to leave a relationship that included cruelty to animals became more complex. Twenty-eight percent of women reported they would have left their abusive relationship earlier if they had not had a pet or animal. The length of time they stayed ranged from one week to 22 years with an average of two years.

The research also uncovered information about how children witnessed animal cruelty. Of the 159 research participants with children, a quarter reported that their children had witnessed someone in their family injure or kill a pet or animal. The research is available from the websites of the RNZSPCA and Women?s Refuge.

?Disturbingly, many of the women reported that partners who had warnings or convictions around physical violence, would deliberately threaten or hurt pets as a way of controlling their family and make it easier to avoid reconviction,? says Heather Henare, Chief Executive of Women?s Refuge.

?In this way, pets and other animals become part of an arsenal of tricks abusers use to instil fear and control over their family. Some men will threaten to kill family pets if the women leaves, and in some cases women and children have witnessed extreme torture of pets or animals as part of the horror of domestic violence.?

?The SPCA is already delivering presentations to intermediate school children throughout New Zealand teaching empathy and empowerment around kindness to animals and each other. But this research reveals that this is not enough to protect women who are attached to their pets from the perpetrators of domestic violence and we need to do more,? says Ms Kippenberger.

Average prices for both new and resale homes have climbed modestly.

The average rate on 30-year, fixed-payment loans in late March rose above 4 percent for the first time in six months, according to economists at the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp.

Traditionally, rising rates tend to push sales lower. But some experts say the recent increase could actually boost activity and prices by prompting more people to jump off the homebuying fence and finally make a purchase.

Q. My wife and I are both 60 years old, and we hope to retire in about three years. We visited a retirement community in another state last month and really liked it. With prices so low, we are thinking about buying a place there now, then renting it to tenants until we are ready to move into it ourselves. What do you think of our plan?

A. Frankly, not much.

Owning an out-of-state rental property is rarely a good idea, regardless of a person?s age. Managing a far-away rental home can be difficult, but few small investors have the financial wherewithal to pay the stiff fees that professional management companies charge while still turning a profit.

The Dardennes' quiet, naturalistic style strips this story of melodrama but not of emotion.

Without diminishing the boy's intensity or making him in any way ingratiating, the Dardennes take us into his mind, and we begin to appreciate not only his predicament but his resiliency.

The Dardennes' latest is one of their best, a memorable cinematic portrait of troubled youth and soul-saving charity.

Young Thomas Doret fills the role with natural sincerity and focus, and not a second that seems contrived.

Makes a powerful statement about the plight of unwanted children. But it also incorporates elements of melodrama, film noir, and even the fairy tale that engage our empathy and confirm the Dardennes' great compassion.

A wonderfully human and humane story about one of those lost-and-found children who tend to slip through society's not-so-safe safety nets.

It seems like a fairly minor movie, although one with major emotional pull.

Remains an effective picture with a genuine feel for human behavior, unearthing a direct sense of disturbance and a few select moments of stunning psychological clarity.

A film of rosy optimism it features a beguiling performance from screen newcomer doret who achieves a wonderfully natural, touching chemistry with de France.

Beyond Samantha's hard-to-fathom loyalty, many of the plot twists are predictable and contrived.

You wouldn't exactly call The Kid With a Bike a feel-good movie, but by the end it certainly invites the viewer to be hopeful about human nature. Another gem from the boys.

Dardenne heroes are crafty and restless, down but not out, and Cyril ought to be one of their best. For whatever reason, he isn't, quite.

Their central characters are flawed, and often do awful things, but the Dardennnes' world view is entirely practical.

Jakob Nordenhof J?nck,Co-Founder, Endomondo

There is an emerging community of digital health entrepreneurs utilizing technology innovation to help transform healthcare. In an effort to provide coverage of this growing community and inspire future digital health entrepreneurs, HIT Consultant has launched ?HIT Innovation Founder Stories? where we will speak with a digital health founder to share their journey from inception to launch, obstacles/challenges, and lessons learned.

In our first HIT Innovation Founder Stories, we speak with Jakob Nordenhof J?nck, Co-Founder of Endomondo, where Jakob shares his story of how three former McKinsey & Co. management consultants (all former semi or professional athletes) took their passion for active, healthy lifestyles and created Endomondo, a social fitness application that turns mobile phones into full-fledged personal trainers. Endomondo is a great example of how technology can be utilized as a tool to provide consumers with the means to manage/monitor their own health and promote an active, healthy lifestyle.

HIT Consultant: Tell me how Endomondo was started?

Jakob J?nck: Endomondo is four years old. We came together for three years discussing different things we wanted to do and basically we all had a shared lust for active lifestyles. We all came from various backgrounds in semi or professional sports and we really wanted to see what we would do there to leverage that lust of what we did when we were not working as consultants. One of the things that was pretty obvious back in 2006-2007, social media was really coming on strong. It was back in the day when MySpace was the leading community, but Facebook was rapidly picking up. We figured that was an interesting trend. At the same time, I remembered we were using different kinds of devices. I was a Sun Tool watch user and other people were using Garmin and some people were using the Nike iPod. People were using a ton of stuff to track their training.

So, what was a real obstacle for us in terms of sharing when we?re not doing it together was that all of these tracking instruments were using their individual data files. So, I literally could not play with anybody using a Sun Tool watch. At that time, Sun Tool didn?t have anything online so it was only an individual experience that I did. Those were sort of the two big things, one of them being very irritating to us. The other thing was to be really into this game, to use these instruments it came off a pretty high intro price. The entry price for a Garmin at the time was pretty expensive for the high-end watches and was well above $500 dollars for the stuff that we were using meaning basically the people who would use it was a relatively small group of people. At that time, I personally stopped doing semi-pro sports; you know you just wanted to have fun with your friends being active not just necessarily the elite or semi-elite people.

So the sheer cost of these instruments was a real obstacle for us, basically, was just playing having fun with ourselves and our friends. We sort of put these three things together and we bet on the mobile and this was contrary to every industry report at the time. We bet that GPS was going to go mobile by 2010 and by 2011 it will be really common. We made that bet in 2008 and nobody believed us at the time, nobody.

We came out with the first tracker/app in 2008 and this does not sound like a long time, but this was before the iPhone had GPS functionality enabled. So, nobody could look at their phone as being a sports device and when we tested this on people, they were like: ?Yeah, I?m never going to run with my phone or cycle with it. It?s just a hassle to bring your phone onto this.? But we really believe in it, because we thought we could make an instrument close to free and make it in a scalable way and using the functionality and technology that was becoming common. Secondly, we thought we could really totally cross the other barrier of being able to share data, because we could integrate with other technology we could get our hands on. So, we really tried to break these barriers down by creating what we did and that mobile tracker, that mobile app, was what we really needed that boost to create this community to be integrated with other types of devices.

So, that was what really drove the project; a lot of love and some critical thinking on what we can do to leverage technology to overcome these barriers at the time and we saw them as real issues. So that was the founding story and since we were so early on, it took a while to really catch on. But again, the iPhone completely changed this game for everybody. First of all, because GPS in your phone became available for a lot of people, Nokia had driven this beforehand, but soon as the iPhone came out they started losing ground.

The app stores of course helped this equation a lot. We benefited from being the early one out in a lot of different platforms and really had a chance to build a product with the users hand-to-hand to get really good feedback on what worked and what did not work. So, that was sort of the principle and I think really from the fall of 2010, that?s when the snowball really started to hit. When you saw the general availability of these phones coupled with social media being what everybody was used to and integrating across different systems. That was sort of the point in Q4 in 2010 where we really started to snowball?started to run and it?s been a really fun ride every since.

HIT Consultant: What is the meaning behind Endomondo?

Jakob J?nck: So actually to be honest we were looking through more than 3,000 URLs. One of the issues when you start a tech company that is relatively difficult to actually get a name that is not already claimed. But at the same time, we really wanted to find something that would resemble a community, activity and other kinds of stuff. Endo is short for endorphins. Mondo is the world in Esperanto, which is the international language and is also the same in Italian and if you exchange the ?o? with the ?u? in Spanish. It is really to create a world of endorphins. That?s where the name comes from and it came up in a brainstorm between Mette, Christian and I. Somebody was saying endorphins and I?m an old language student so it was like mondo then Endomondo and people was like no it is kind of too long. It kind of just stuck and today we are quite happy about it. We never anticipated or wanted Endomondo to be something just for runners. We really wanted to create a network for people that were active, a social fitness network. That was what we wanted to create, so being for runners only or bikers only was never really the essence of what we were trying to create. So today we are very happy about our name because it does not talk too much to any particular sport, it talks to a broad range of people

HIT Consultant: What gave you guys the foresight to see so far ahead before the iPhone? What made you guys see that vision and know it would work?

Jakob J?nck: We did not know it was going to work. That was the bet we took. From the beginning, when we saw this, we had a vision of a social fitness network, but neither of us really believed that we could do this. Becoming a Facebook of fitness, just like that. We basically thought that okay so Facebook and others they are claiming the social community space per se. So, in order to create our own, we could either build that within the Facebook platform, which was not possible at the time, or we could try to create our own. In order to do that, we needed a tool to do that, we needed a tool to drive engagement. And that tool, you know, is actually the same that was on the really expensive sport watches at the time. That tool we had to bet that the mobile was going to make it and that we could bring that cost down.

We looked at all these industry reports, you have to remember we were working at McKinsey at the time and I was working in the media sector in the media industry. So, I was into these numbers all the time for different global media companies looking at all the different media verticals. One of them being the Internet, and also the mobile industry, which was closely connected. It was not a matter of if the GPS came out into the phone; it was a matter of when it was going to come out. So, that was where the confusion and discussion came up and I remember that before the iPhone came out, people were betting that it was going to happen in 2013-2014; that was when you would see the general availability response. But the iPhone just changed this completely and in all honesty, we bet on it, but it was also a strike of luck that our bet came true.

HIT Consultant: I?m glad you touched on your management consultant background, were you guys bootstrapping while working as management consultants while building from the ground up or did you just leave McKinsey?

Jakob J?nck: So, we were definitely talking about this way before we left. We were talking about different things you know. I was the one working in the media vertical. I remember one day Christian called me up and said, ?Hey I quit, I can?t do this anymore.? We talked about this for a long time, almost three quarters of a year where we met for brunch, lunches and stuff when we could. We were traveling a lot, at McKinsey you travel a lot, so predominately you meet on the weekends and discuss. And that?s what we did and when he called me up, I was like, ?Ok, let?s go for it, this is what we want, let?s go for it now.? There is never good timing so we just went for it. But we completely quit our jobs and went for it, there was no in between in our mind. We really didn?t believe in creating a company without doing it full time, especially when you are working at McKinsey working 60-80 hours a week. So it was either/or and we chose to go for it full on. There is a bonus system there, so we had a bit of bonus. Not a whole lot to be honest, but enough that would take us half a year out without going totally bankrupt. And we thought that was going to be enough to get funding; we were pretty na?ve at the time. Then, Lehman Brothers went down; there were a lot of things we didn?t anticipate. One of them was Lehman Brothers and the entire financial crisis which totally shut down on the cash flow from investors and VCs (venture capitalists) around the world. So we found ourselves in the mist of all of this trying to raise money for a project where no trends and no experts were bidding on us. So needless to say, it was a complete disaster really trying to raise money. We ended up bootstrapping for a year and a half with no money whatsoever and we took all the loans that we could get individually and we tossed them into the company.

A major deficit of being McKinsey consultant was none of us could actually code and I don?t think we would do the same thing again. We were an over-managed company and not enough tech expertise, so with all of the money we did some jobs here and there and we got a prototype out there and that was enough to get a little bit of cash in there. We didn?t take cash for the first investment; we didn?t use it for ourselves at all. We hired engineers right away and they got equity. They saw the potential and we did that for quite a long time. We were bootstrapping for 18 months with no salary and then we started earning like next to nothing just to pay the really basic, like the rent. We still couldn?t really survive, but we wouldn?t go too far into debt. This changed with the first round of capital but it took more than two years for people to really see this trend.

GSMA and WBA team up to develop WiFi roaming framework for cellphones, tablets

Image Many phones have WiFi, and there are hotspots in all sorts of places these days, so wouldn't it be cool if you could use them for roaming, regardless of provider? Well, if a new collaboration between the GSMA and the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) has any say in the matter, one day you might be able to do just that. The goal is to simplify how cellphones can connect to those hotspots, by developing a technical framework for seamless WiFi roaming. The new standard will be based on the WBA's "Next Generation Hotspot" initiative and the WiFi Alliance's "Passpoint certification" system, taking cues from the GSMA's established roaming experience. The basic principles have already been laid down, and just require network formalities such as security and billing to be taken care of. No peep on when we might start seeing dividends, alas, so for now your subway ride can continue in (relative) peace.

Indonesia police shoot dead suspected militants in Bali

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesian police shot dead five suspected militants in Bali overnight who had identified and surveyed targets they were planning to attack, the national counter terrorism agency said on Monday, and were linked to the banned Jemaah Islamiah group.

"They have several targets in several locations in Bali. They have surveyed the places," Ansyaad Mbai, head of national counter-terrorism agency, told Reuters by phone.

Mbai described the sites as "typical terrorist targets" but declined to give further details. The group to which the suspects belonged was linked to one that had conducted bank robberies in Medan and paramilitary training in Aceh and in Solo, central Java, he said.

In 2002, night-club bombings in Bali blamed on the al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiah killed more than 200 people, many of them Australian tourists.

That attack was a watershed for Indonesia, which has the world's largest Muslim population, forcing the secular state to confront the presence of violent militants on its soil.

Australian media reported that Indonesia's counter-terror police unit known as Detachment 88 stormed two separate addresses on Bali, in the capital Denpasar and at a hotel in Sanur, on Sunday night.

Three men were killed at the hotel in Sanur, an area popular with foreign tourists, and two at the Denpasar location, media said, quoting Australian Associated Press. (AAP)

"Last night we have paralyzed five criminal perpetrators who were planning to commit terrorist acts and rob foreign currency and gold shops in several locations in Bali," national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told Reuters.

"All the suspects died during the raids because they defied or shot back with pistols at the police officers," he said.

He said the five had been followed and were about to rob a foreign exchange bureau and a gold shop when police intervened, he said.

Police confiscated two rifles, two ammunition magazines, 48 bullets and a balaclava, he said.

National police spokesman Saud Usman Nasution said: "This is an Islamic militant group, a splinter group of Jemaah Islamiah who established a training camp in Aceh."

"They were trying to do a heist because they want to collect money for their fight," he said.

AAP quoted another senior police officer as saying it was possible the group had been planning to carry out attacks on Thursday, the eve of Nyepi, or the annual Day of Silence marking Bali's Hindu New Year.

Balinese traditionally hold large parades on the eve of Nyepi, which also draws large numbers of tourists, AAP said.

The killings follow the start of a trial last month of an Islamist militant accused of making the bombs used in the 2002 Bali nightclubs attack.

Umar Patek, who was captured in the same Pakistan town where U.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden, is also accused of mixing chemicals for 13 bombs that detonated in five churches in Jakarta on Christmas Eve, 2000, killing about 15 people.

Security officials say he belonged to Jemaah Islamiah.
