Hind wings gave four-winged dino flight control

Much-debated rear wings could have given Microraptor extra help in airborne maneuvers

    access Enlarge

    GREAT CORNERS

Four-winged dinosaurs didn?t have to splay out all their limbs to benefit from the rear pair, instead using the hind legs to maneuver in tight turns.

    3D reconstruction by David Krentz

RALEIGH, N.C. ? A rethink of four-winged dinosaurs suggests that the much-debated hind wings stayed tucked under the body until deployed in the air for tight turns to dodge branches or chase prey.

Just what a dinosaur did with well-developed feathers on all four of its limbs has been a puzzle since the 2003 unveiling of roughly 130-million-year-old Microraptor gui fossils from northeastern China. The first reconstruction showed the small dinosaur gliding in the air with all four limbs extended outward. A later proposal lowered the hind-limb feathers for a Wright-Brothers biplane of wings. Both arrangements have drawn criticism.

In a simpler solution, the dinosaur could have kept its hind limbs under its body much of the time until needed for banking in a turn, Justin Hall of the University of Southern California said on October 20 at the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. Extending a feathery right leg a bit while veering left, or vice versa, could easily have shrunk the turning the radius by a notable amount depending on the leg angle, he and his colleagues calculated.

That boost for agility makes more sense aerodynamically than keeping both Microraptor hind limbs extended, Hall said. The probable shape of the hind legs? feather array wouldn?t have generated much lift, so the extra surface would have been worse than useless for straight-ahead moves. ?For every surface, you pay a little drag tax,? said coauthor Michael Habib, also at USC.

In contrast, deft maneuvering would have helped the forest-dwelling M. gui cope with complex obstacles. Also, Habib said, the four-winged dinosaur still had the basic body shape of its terrestrial lineage, and feathered legs and a large tail fan could have helped compensate when in the air.

    M. gui may be the best known of four-winged dinosaurs, but paleontologists have since found several more. The researchers? method of calculating an agility boost should work for all four-winged species, said coauthor Luis Chiappe of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. And, Habib said, agility should matter regardless of whether a four-winged dinosaur could power along in sustained flight or just glide.

Powered flight and gliding downward have developed in quite different evolutionary branches, said Kevin Padian of the University of California, Berkeley. Maneuverability is certainly important to both, but he does not see gliding as an evolutionary baby step on a path toward powered flight.

    How Heartbreak Affects Your Health

    Hormones

The second he said adios, your adrenal glands started churning out the hormones cortisol and adrenaline, the costars of the body's fight-or-flight stress response. Depending on how bad the breakup was, your stress hormones are anywhere from simmering to skyrocketing (a reaction that, like all of the below, can settle down after a few days or last for years)--and they're likely ratcheting up your blood pressure.

9 Things Your Guy Will Never Reveal

    Brain

It's like clockwork: Your eyes hit that photo of the two of you and--boom!--awful stomach pit. You feel sick, yet you can't look away. That's because the moment you saw his face, blood started rushing to your brain's pleasure center, the ventral tegmental area. These are all the good times talking.

The command center for craving and longing also lights up. It demands attention--one reason you're obsessed with driving by your ex's house, stalking his Facebook page, or trying to replace him with some other satisfier (welcome, merlot and Ben & Jerry).

But rejection also sends blood flow to two other areas: the secondary somatosensory cortex and the dorsal posterior insula, both involved in producing physical pain. That's why you may feel achy all over, not just in your heart.

Initially crowded out by the above responses, your left prefrontal cortex slowly starts to light up. This part of your brain is responsible for reassessment and evaluation--the one saying, Maybe it's for the best. A mere whisper now, this signal will get stronger as time goes on.

    Stomach

Your stressed-out nervous system signals your digestion to slow way down. Your stomach hurts, and you have zero appetite--except maybe for that pint of ice cream.

Stomach 101: How To Cure Any Stomach Pain

    Immune System

The stress of rejection might agitate your body's immune system, leading to cell-damaging inflammation. The parts of your immune system that fight infection and keep viruses under control start to lose steam. You may get sick or develop a cold sore (yeah, great, just what you need right now).

    Skin

That free-flowing cortisol? It's triggering a pore-clogging oil buildup underneath your skin. Hence, why a broken heart is often accompanied by acne.

    Hair

If you're totally devastated, some of the hair follicles on your head could enter a state called telogen effluvium. That's medspeak for "resting phase," in which your strands stop growing or, after a while, start falling out.

Don't worry--that reassessment area of your brain is no JV player. Soon enough, it will have you thinking, Yes, it was for the best. You'll grow new hair--and find new love.

    General information on Ylcea

Languages: Id-Heren and Spelheim have distinct languages. Most Id-Herans speak Citian, however. Socharev usually speak both languages. Algam has its own tongue, but mysteriously, it shares a large part of its grammar with Citian. Citians pick up the Algam language fairly easily, and the reverse is also true.

Mingling: some mingling and migration does occur between the two human countries. You will see some Citian red hair in Id-Heren, and some Id-Heran blond in the City. Socharev can be just about anywhere, but it is unlikely for them to hold positions of power. These people are a target for discrimination, but with the recent emergence of humanity's common enemy in the beasts, this has decreased somewhat.

Money: Coins are primarily used in the two human capitals, though the larger Towns in Spelheim may also use them. Id-Heren has its own currency, but Citian coins are accepted everywhere. The two countries' coinage is roughly equivalent in weight - in daily life, a copper piece from one country is worth the same as the other. Some may insist on Citian coinage though, as it is the more powerful.
Coppers, bronze and brass make up the lowest currency, and are used for daily necessities. A silver piece would already be more than a commoner's weekly pay, and gold is reserved for the nobility.
The rest of the humans simply trade goods and favors. Algam, too, functions under a system of favors and cooperation.

More to be added here, undoubtedly.

Who?s in worse shape: RIM or Nokia?

Trying to decide whether RIM (RIMM) or Nokia (NOK) gets the title of ?most troubled mobile device manufacturer? is a daunting exercise in a lot of ways, much like trying to decide whether someone is better off losing their kidneys or their liver. Looking at both companies? latest financials and their overall business strategies, though, and you can make a pretty persuasive case that Nokia is in even tougher shape than its Canadian counterpart.

Let?s start with RIM: In its last quarter the company lost?$235 million and its shares surged because it didn?t lose nearly as much money as analysts expected. And that really tells you all you need to know about RIM?s financial situation right now: It?s really bad. At the same time, though, this is a marked improvement over the $518 million loss the company posted in the previous quarter, which marked the first time the company had posted a net loss since 2004.

Nokia, on the other hand, has been losing even larger sums of money for a much longer amount of time. Finland?s former dynamo has lost money for six consecutive quarters and has regularly seen its quarterly losses top the $1 billion mark, including a $1.27 billion net loss last quarter. Granted, Nokia?s market cap is more than twice as large as RIM?s, but losing more than $1 billion in a quarter is never a good thing, especially if you?ve done it multiple times over the past year.

Looking past the financials, I think that Nokia is in worse shape than RIM in terms of long-term business strategy as well. RIM, for better or worse, is at least in control of its own destiny to some extent. Yes, it?s still losing important customers, its BlackBerry 10 operating system has been delayed and it hasn?t released a new smartphone in what seems like ages. But here?s the key: RIM is in exclusive control of its own operating system and it has a loyal customer base who will stick with it to the very last. This is important because people who still want the RIM experience have nowhere else to go: It?s BlackBerry 10 or bust for them and they will shell out cash to get it.

Nokia, on the other hand, isn?t so fortunate because it?s going exclusively with Windows Phone 8 and lots of companies out there are preparing to blitz the market with Windows devices in the coming months. The tragedy of this is that Nokia still has top-notch engineering talent that?s capable of crafting gorgeous-looking devices. But this doesn?t matter right now because the company?s partnership with Microsoft has so far proven to be utterly disastrous.

Nokia, for reasons that still confound me, decided to go exclusively with Windows Phone in exchange for? well, I?m not really sure what they?re getting in return. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said recently that Microsoft??could? give his company exclusive access to certain parts or aspects of Windows Phone in the future, although he said that the company hadn?t done so yet. He also cited unspecified contractual rights that Nokia received by being the first company to exclusively use Windows Phone, but wouldn?t go into any details about what those rights entailed.

What we know so far, though, is that these exclusive goodies haven?t translated into sales and they haven?t stopped Microsoft from forging ahead with plans to possibly undercut its OEMs once again by building its own smartphone. Elop this week said that his company expected everything to turn around soon because wireless carriers were tired of relying on iOS and Android as the dominant players in the wireless industry and would come flocking to Windows Phone 8 as an alternative. Even if this is true, who?s to say that carriers will flock to Nokia instead of, say, Samsung (005930) or HTC (2498), both of whom have put out Windows Phone 8 devices of their own recently?

With both RIM and Nokia in such dire straits, it wouldn?t be wise to bet on either of them pulling off a major comeback anytime soon. But if someone placed a gun to my head and asked me which company was most likely to survive over the next couple of years, I would have to pick RIM.

Senior security official killed in Lebanon bombing

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanon's state-run media says a senior security official was killed in Friday's car bomb attack in Beirut.

The National News Agency said in a statement that it "announces the martyrdom" of Maj. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, the head of the national police intelligence unit, in the explosion that ripped through east Beirut.

Al-Hassan was among at least eight people killed. The bomb wounded dozens of other, sheared the balconies off apartment buildings and sent bloodied residents staggering into the streets in the most serious blast the Lebanese capital has seen in more than four years.

For a team that finished with the seventh-best regular-season record in the American League, it didn't take long for the Detroit Tigers to storm their way through two playoff series to their first pennant since 2006.

The Tigers never even trailed at any point in the ALCS, marking only the fifth time that's happened in a postseason sweep. And as the domination unfolded, the Tigers' potential problems and pitfalls seemed to melt away ? helped along, of course, by the New York Yankees' internal combustion:

    • Could they take advantage of the luck of the draw? Check. We're talking about the No. 3 seed here. That seventh-best record of 88-74 set up the Tigers to host the AL West-champion Oakland A's for the first two games of the LDS? a one-year-only aberration due to commissioner Bud Selig forcing the new playoff format into effect even though previous scheduling commitments wouldn't allow for two LDS off-days.

Sure enough, the Tigers grabbed control of the series by winning the first two at Comerica Park before needing Justin Verlander to dominate Game 5 in Oakland.

    • Offense? Check. Specifically, support for Austin Jackson, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. Without it, run production sputtered at times in the regular season. But how about these numbers from the supporting cast:

Delmon Young was the ALCS MVP with two homers, five RBI including four game-winners and 11 total bases. He drove in one less run than the Yankees scored. With a two-homer, three-RBI performance in ALCS Game 4, Jhonny Peralta raised his postseason batting average to .343.

And we could very well be witnessing the breakout of the next Tigers' star in 21-year-old Avasail Garcia, who has four RBI with his six post-season hits.

    • Starting pitching? Check-plus. The numbers are all you need: Nine postseason games (all quality starts), 62 innings pitched, seven earned runs, 1.02 ERA, 76 strikeouts. In the ALCS, Verlander, Max Scherzer, Doug Fister and Anibal Sanchez combined to allow only two earned runs in 27.1 innings.

"We're going to have to talk about those two earned runs,'' manager Jim Leyland joked afterward. "At end of day, they pitched unbelievable.''

Any question about Scherzer's sore shoulder that limited his innings down the stretch have been erased. And whether it's the Cardinals or Giants ? both of whom have rotation issues ? there's no starter left capable of dominating more than Verlander.

Defense? Check: As range-challenged as so many of the Tigers' defenders are, they're catching what they get to. Cabrera hasn't made an error in more than a month. Peralta is playing his best defense lately in a season in which he committed only seven errors. The team's total of four errors wasn't costly.

    • So that leaves the bullpen. And even here, the ALCS only brought positive developments that could carry into the World Series.

Rookie left-handed starter Drew Smyly closing out a 12-inning Game 1 victory with two scoreless innings? Phil Coke entering the series as an unreliable situational left-hander, and coming out with three saves? These were not expected outcomes. Smyly's regular-season opponents' OPS was 88 points lower against left-handed hitters (.671) than right-handed hitters (.759). So he's capable of succeeding in late-inning situations against left-handed hitters, as well as multi-inning relief appearances.

Coke was terrible against right-handed hitting in the regular season ? .396 batting average, .446 on-base, .604 slugging for a 1.050 OPS. So he's best-suited to work primarily against left-handed hitters, and it's possible he will fall back into that role in the World Series, especially if the Cardinals advance, as their 3-6 hitters all are right-handed.

The Cardinals know all about journeyman right-hander Octavio Dotel, since he was a key contributor in their bullpen last post-season. His repertoire is slider-dominant, which helps explain his success against right-handed hitters ? .197 batting average, .217 on-base, .307 slugging for a .523 OPS.

And five off days until World Series Game 1 also could allow Jose Valverde to make a mechanical and/or mental adjustment. Since the postseason began, he's been an obvious liability, but a majority of the damage has been done by left-handed hitters. In fact, his regular-season splits are wide:

    Vs. left-handed hitters: .257 BA/.337 OBP/.417; Slugging/.754 OPS

    Vs. right-handed hitters: .193 BA/.270 OBP/.246; Slugging/.515 OPS

So at the very least, Valverde should be able to have success against right-handed hitters ? and the Tigers could need that against St. Louis, or the Buster Posey/Hunter Pence No. 4-5 combination if the Giants advance.

And the funny thing is ? especially when you're talking about a closer ? there has been little correlation between the Tigers' won-loss record and Valverde's performance.

When the Tigers won eight of their last 10 to pass the Chicago White Sox and win the AL Central, Valverde pitched five scoreless innings and earned four saves.

But in a 7-2 postseason, Valverde has the ugly line of 2.1 IP, 7 hits, 7 runs, a loss and a blown save.

Passionate and Creative Homemaking: Homemaking Around the ...

Welcome to another edition of Homemaking Around the Internet. This is where I find homemaking articles around the internet that I would like to share with you!

There is a blog that I have read for a few years that totally slipped my mind. When I went and visited it, I couldn't believe all the goodies I missed! In fact I have printed off all of these posts and stored them in my home management binder.

So this one is filled with some of their wonderful posts!

Here is an articled titled "Don't Revere the Pioneer." If you love to read about how women did things in the old time - this one is for you. If you ever wonder why you can't do a certain task when women years ago had to wash their clothes by hand - this one is for you.

I have always had a fascination with women from the past. My Nook is filled with homemaking books from the early nineteen hundreds...even late eighteen hundreds. I didn't realize how much I would?subconsciously?feel bad about getting tired of doing chores, such as the laundry when they had to do them by hand. But, like this article has said, our standards are different than back then. Back then the average person had 2 outfits and one for Sunday. So imagine having your husband come home from work and him going to work the next day wearing the same clothes? Gross right? Well it didn't bother them then.We have higher standards of clean, which means more clothes and more laundry. They may have only washed a few items once a week but we have a lot more clothes to take care of.?

She talks a lot about similarities like that. I highly recommend it. It actually freed me from what I thought was a fascination with "pioneer" women, when in fact I was feeling bad about myself. It's very freeing to know that we work just as hard, if not harder, than the women before us.

After all, "No pioneer woman ever stepped on a Lego block." - Mrs Eva H

This article is written by the same woman who writes the blog A Wise Woman Builds Her Home. It's one of those articles that I highly recommend you read...in fact I think that way with all of them today (well really, if I posted them on here it's because I liked the article so much I think others should read them anyways lol). This article is another one that helped me with my value as a homemaker.?

"Home culture takes planning?it takes time?it takes thought." - Mrs June Fuentes

I printed this one too. It's just a practical and enjoyable read that makes you want to go do something in your home to make it more comfy.

This is another powerful article. Do you view yourself as Queen of your home or just someone who has to clean up after everyone and is everyone's "slave?" This article is WONDERFUL!!!

"It is one of Scripture?s beautiful mysteries that as we lay down our lives in happy service to the Lord and our families ? loving and helping our husbands, teaching and training our children, caring for our homes and reaching out the hand of hospitality ? we are actually elevated to a position of nobility that far exceeds what any career could ever offer." - Jennifer McBride

Again, another must read...but this is a must MUST read lol. It's a short read so please check it out. I wanted to write an article about how Satan is attacking the woman's roll but this post just about sums it up!

This post talks about the value of a woman leaving work to focus more on standing behind her husband and helping him be the best he can be, and therefore actually improving the family

"As wives, homemakers, and mothers, we get the most fulfilling, well-rounded ?career? imaginable. We wear many hats, all of which have been laid out in Scripture for thousands of years. To us, they?re second-nature. So it?s a little amusing to see a ?dyed-in-the-wool? feminist ?discovering? truths that most of us have just practiced quietly for years?all while being ridiculed, put down, sneered at, or mocked as ?baby machines,? mindless drones, slaves, and all manner of other ridiculous invectives." - Jennie Chancey

This is another post that helps us see the value in our role as homemaker

"So what?s so great about being at home? How could serving at home possibly be important in the grand scheme of things? After all, isn?t staying at home just about doing dishes, cleaning floors, and wiping runny noses? What?s so important about all that? Friends, this is exactly what Satan would like us to think about the woman?s role in the home. He is delighted when the home is reduced to a list of chores...." - Jennie Chancey

I hope you enjoy my little "Homemaking Around the Internet" posts. ?These articles are blessings in my life and I hope they are to you too!

we heart this - Sage and Brown Butter Penne Recipe

It?s pasta season! Add a twist to the family fave with this cozy, nutty version

photos: stefanie for we heart this

Brown butter? Are you into it yet? No? You don?t know what brown butter is? Well, let me tell you. Brown butter is what happens when you heat butter until all the milk solids cook down and slightly brown. What you are left with is warm hazelnutty awesomeness. It is the perfect nutty flavor addition to any dish, from baked goods to, let?s say pasta.

Browning butter takes about fifteen minutes total. Boiling pasta takes about seven minutes. Do you see where I am going with this? You can have dinner that is out of this world and shockingly easy ? that is ready in under thirty minutes!

This recipe for Sage & Brown Butter Penne is one of my go-to weeknight meals. I hope it will become one of yours as well.

    Ingredients (Serves 4)

    ? 4 Cups Rotini
    ? ? Cup Unsalted Butter
    ? 7 Sage Leaves, chopped
    ? 1 Clove Garlic, grated
? Pinch of Salt & Pepper

    Directions:

    1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the penne to the water and boil for seven minutes.

    2. While the pasta cooks, brown the butter. In a large skillet melt the butter over medium/low heat. Keep a close eye on the butter. When it stops crackling and foaming, small brown flecks should start appearing in the bottom of the pan.

    3. After about ten minutes, add the sage, grated garlic, salt, and pepper. Stir for three minutes with a rubber spatula, then remove pan from heat to make sure that the garlic and butter doesn?t burn.

    4. Drain pasta and add to the skillet with the brown butter sauce.

    5. Mix well, transfer to serving bowl, and serve hot with some fresh grated cheese on top.

    Bon app?tit!

Readers ? what are your favorite go-to pasta dishes?

European Muslims hoping to fight in Syria's rebellion raise new fears

PARIS - European governments have been among the most vocal supporters of Syria's rebels ? to a point: Last week, Muslims in Britain and France accused of trying to join the fight against the regime were detained.

For security officials, the fear is that extremists with European passports who are alienated and newly trained to wage war will ultimately take skills learned in Syria and use them back home. In France, where an Islamic extremist trained in Pakistan attacked a Jewish school and a group of soldiers earlier this year, the fear is particularly acute.

French officials have jailed eight people, including one over the weekend, describing the group as a network of French-born radical Islamists bent on targeting Jewish groups at home and fighting holy war abroad. They said the cell attacked a kosher grocery with a grenade and had a structure in place to send Muslims to fight in Syria alongside the rebels.

"The enemies within will require vigilance and great determination," France's top security official, Interior Minister Manuel Valls, said Friday. "We know that there could be some who were not apprehended, who perhaps went abroad to fight."

Security officials worldwide have watched the aftermath of the Arab Spring with caution, particularly concerned that citizens who join the fight could return home more radicalized and with a new ability to carry out guerilla warfare. European officials have a particular concern: It's a short flight from the Mideast and the borders within the European Union are open for anyone with an EU passport or national ID, making undetected travel a simple matter.

"We have been keeping a close eye on who is going to Syria, but unlike Libya, there are multiple ways into the country and it's not as easy to track," said a European security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak to the media. "Still, we're particularly concerned that people returning will come back with new skills that could present a threat to our security."

It's a sensitive and complex issue, say European intelligence officials. There's evidence that foreigners are joining the fight against Syrian President Bashar Assad, but their numbers ? especially those from Europe ? are believed to be small. But what is a minor issue in Syria could become a big issue in Europe, where many Muslims, even the native born, feel increasingly marginalized.

Syrian rebels are downplaying the newcomers' impact on the struggle to dislodge Assad. George Sabra, spokesman for the Syrian National Council, insisted last week that the foreign fighters presented no long-term problem for Syria: "They say they've come to help the Syrian people and they'll return home again."

That's precisely what many security officials are afraid of. Noman Benotman, a former jihadist fighter who now works for the London-based Quillium Foundation, offers an even more sobering view. He said it's not the warfare skills that security officials should fear but rather the sense of anger and lack of fear.

"There is an impression amongst some fighters in Syria that the West has abandoned them," said Benotman, who now works as an analyst for the anti-radicalization think-tank . "After you're engaged in such a battle, you lose all sense of fear. This is exactly what al-Qaida recruiters look to as their dream opportunity for recruits."

He said fighters who return to Europe and elsewhere will have come back prepared for war ? but without any obvious outlet.

"The radicalization process has already started" in Syria, he said. "If al-Qaida elements don't capitalize on this in Syria, they will do it anywhere they can. We've seen this before with Chechnya and other places."

Before Syria, it was the Iraq war which drew foreign radicals, including five Frenchmen of North African origin who were convicted of running a network to funnel French Muslims to fight against American forces.

The foreign mujahedeen who fought against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan are the classic example. Osama bin Laden is the most notorious among them, but others include the first leader of the Islamist Abu Sayyaf separatist movement in the Philippines, and some of the first recruits for Jemaah Islamiyah, the terror group that ultimately carried out the Bali bombings in 2002, killing 202 people.

In London, police last week arrested two British nationals at Heathrow Airport as part of an investigation into travel to Syria in support of alleged terrorist activity.

Britain is home to a large Muslim population and suffered a devastating 2005 terrorist attack perpetrated by British-born Islamists. Fears there that British Muslims might be slipping into Syria to join al-Qaida extremists were heightened in August when freelance photographer John Cantlie claimed he had been held hostage by a group of extremists including a man he identified as having a London accent.

France, Syria's one-time colonial ruler and a strong supporter of the rebellion, was the first to recognize the opposition Syrian National Council, whose leaders again returned to Paris last week looking for backing. The administration has given millions in aid and non-lethal supplies, but President Francois Hollande has drawn the line at weapons, saying in a televised interview last week "when you supply arms, you never know where they're going to end up."

The same might be said of fighters: The French government is on the verge of passing a law that would bar citizens from training for terrorism abroad. The law stemmed from the March attacks in Toulouse by a radical Islamist born in France who received paramilitary training in Pakistan. The attacker, Mohammed Merah, killed seven people before dying in a shootout with police.

Valls, the French interior minister, has spoken out strongly, especially last week in the aftermath of the French arrests: "The terrorist menace is mutating."

(AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

(AP) ? At every turn of Endeavour's stop-and-go commute through urban streets, a constellation of spectators trailed along as the space shuttle ploddingly nosed past stores, schools, churches and front yards.

Having escaped out of Earth's atmosphere two dozen times, Endeavour's slow-speed trek Saturday to its retirement center took it through the working class streets of southern Los Angeles.

In an instant, the shuttle crossings became part of history.

Along the 12-mile course, people marveled at the engineering. Some rooted for Endeavour when it appeared it might clip a lightpost. Others wondered if it could just hurry up to its destination.

Crowds gathered in front of lnglewood High School before sunrise Saturday to watch Endeavour roll by at about 2 mph. Many were bundled up sipping coffee.

Dean Martinez, who lives in Los Angeles but works in Inglewood, came with his wife and 9-year-old daughter.

"This is great for the city as a whole. It makes us proud," said Martinez, a project director for a nonprofit whose family took turns taking pictures of one another as the shuttle slowly inched by.

Added his wife, Marcia, "It's a big deal especially for this neighborhood. It's important to witness history and for our children to experience it."

Endeavour was scheduled to inch into the California Science Center late Saturday to spend the rest of its years as a museum piece.

Before it did, the shuttle made a late-morning pit stop at the Forum, where it was greeted in the arena's parking lot by a throng of cheering spectators. After crawling up Crenshaw Boulevard, the shuttle was scheduled to stop for a bit at the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A celebration was planned, including speeches by politicians and a dance performance choreographed by Debbie Allen.

Endeavour hit the pavement before dawn Friday, trundling out of the Los Angeles International Airport on a remote-controlled 160-wheel carrier past diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs. The first day of the move was punctuated by long idle spells as crews reconfigured the carrier and leapfrogged ahead on the route to hoist power lines and dismantle traffic lights and street signs.

The pace picked up Friday night when the five-story-tall shuttle was towed over a freeway overpass by a truck (The mated shuttle and carrier were too heavy for that section.) Next to the freeway, Randy's Donuts roadside sign, featured in movies such as "Iron Man 2," landed another cameo as a shuttle backdrop.

There were bumps in the road. Several hundred Inglewood residents suffered hours-long outages when power lines were temporarily snipped. Some businesses lost customers because of street and sidewalk closures.

For most of the way, Endeavour straddled wide boulevards ? Manchester, Crenshaw, Martin Luther King Jr. The one exception was when the shuttle poked through a slightly curved residential street lined with apartment buildings on both sides. It was such a squeeze that its 78-foot wingspan towered over driveways.

John Wilkes, 69, a longtime Inglewood resident, woke up five hours earlier than usual to stake out a spot.

"This is definitely a treat," said Wilkes, who is retired from the airline industry. "But what would be a better treat is to be able to take a ride on the shuttle."

As it wound through South Los Angeles, residents welcomed its presence. Before the move, some lamented over the loss of shade as trees were chopped down to provide clearance.

When Endeavour rolls down King Boulevard, special attention will be paid to the pine trees planted in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

Endeavour may have circled the globe nearly 4,700 times, but its roots are grounded in California. Its main engines were fabricated in the San Fernando Valley. The heat tiles were invented in Silicon Valley. Its "fly-by-wire" technology was developed in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey.

It's no longer shiny and sleek like when it first rolled off the assembly line in the Mojave Desert in 1991 to replace the lost Challenger. As it cruised block-by-block, it's hard to miss what 123 million miles in space and two dozen re-entries can do to the exterior.

"You can sense the magnitude of where it's been," said Janet Dion, a family therapist from Manhattan Beach, fixating on the heat tiles that protected the shuttle during the return to Earth.

Shuffling Endeavour through city streets was a laborious undertaking ? nearly a year in the making. It could not be taken apart without damaging the delicate tiles. Airlifting it was out of the question. So was driving on freeways since it was too massive to fit through underpasses.

"This is unlike anything we've ever moved before," said Jim Hennessy, a spokesman for Sarens, the contract mover.

Once movers settled on the route, the neighborhoods with a front-row seat were transformed. Some 400 trees were cleared with the promise of replanting later. Telephone, cable and power lines were lifted sky-high. Chunks of steel plates were laid down to prevent the streets from buckling and to protect underground utilities.

It'll take days or weeks before a sense of normalcy is restored. In the case of the trees, it'll be years before the newly planted grow to adult height.

Such a move is not cheap. The cross-town transport was estimated at $10 million, to be paid for by the science center and private donations.

Endeavour's transport followed other shuttle moves. Earlier this year, Discovery taxied to the Smithsonian's annex hangar in Virginia. The prototype Enterprise was pulled by barge to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City.

Next month, Atlantis, which remained at its Cape Canaveral, Fla., home base, will be towed short distance to the Kennedy Space Center visitor's lobby.
