Crestwood Park officially reopens, as Birmingham Mayor William Bell stumps for support of bond initiative

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Birmingham city officials and residents of the Crestwood neighborhood turned out this morning to formally re-open Crestwood Park following a $2.56 million renovation project.

The park, which dates to the 1940s, was revamped over the past 10 months. It opened earlier this month, but an official ribbon-cutting was held today.

Improvements include new wildflower plantings, a children's playground, a "tailgate lawn" for picnicking and updates to the pavilion, patio, pool, tennis courts and walking track.

Mayor William Bell and Councilwoman Valerie Abbott both called for support in the Oct. 9 referendum on a $150 million bond initiative for city projects, including parks, street improvements and economic development.

On the ballot, citizens will be asked for their support of bond money in different categories; if approved, the Birmingham City Council will decide specific projects.

Bell asked for support of the measure "so we can make sure Birmingham continues to grow and all of our parks look like this wonderful park."

Whit Macknally of Macknally Land Design and Kris Nikolich of Design Initiative, both Crestwood residents, spoke about their firms' work on the park.

Macknally said natural, strong and sustainable materials were used in the construction, so it would hold up amid frequent use. There also was a concerted effort -- through flyers, emails and Facebook -- to gauge residents' opinions on the new features.

"Our whole design philosophy was to make it a reflection of its neighborhood," he said of the park.

Sister Mary Oliver, secretary of the North Crestwood Neighborhood Association, gave an account of its history.

The city bought the land for the park, on Crestwood Boulevard, in 1946. Nothing happened until the early 1950s, when civic groups began collecting money for it.

The city got involved then, clearing land for the tennis courts, a baseball diamond and other features. Residents also pitched in, building barbecue pits and doing other work.

Years later, a grassroots effort in the neighborhood prompted the most recent renovations.

"This has been a neighborhood project since its? inception," Oliver said. "From the beginning, it's been a joint effort between the neighbors and the city."

Production-ready Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive supercar unveiled

We're pretty sure we've suffered some amount of vision loss from staring at the ridiculously bright paint scheme on Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell over the past few years. MB has rolled it out at virtually every auto show it can and we've always topped for a gander, but now we finally have the full production version -- and it's in a slightly more tame but visually perhaps even more stunning color, a sort of chrome blue that even in the flesh looks CG rendered. It's the SLS AMG Electric Drive, it's launching next June and we have the full details after the break.

Birmingham residents left out of airport relocation plan want to move ...

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- "Distressed" is what sections of Birmingham's Airport Hills Community have become since their neighbors moved away, thanks to a federal buyout and relocation program in neighborhoods surrounding the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, remaining residents complain.

"It was nice" before the buyout came and people left, said Barbara Walker, who lives with her grown son, Matthew Brock, on Ninth Avenue North. "Kids could play and parents didn't worry about them."

Walker's home, like her friend Lori Blackmon's house on 90th Street North, wasn't included in the Federal Aviation Administration's buyout for airport expansion and noise mitigation. When neighbors left and dozens of their houses were demolished or moved, deterioration set in as vacant lots became overgrown or sites for illegal dumping, Walker said.

At the very least, those left behind want the City of Birmingham and the Birmingham Airport Authority to cut the lots and clean up the community.

"They're not keeping up" with property maintenance, Blackmon said. "They need to come back and check things."

A spokeswoman for the airport authority said the organization does tend to property upkeep on a regular basis in the buyout area. That includes mowing and cleaning up dumping in their neighborhood, said Toni Herrera-Bast, the authority's public relations and marketing manager.

Herrera-Bast also noted that the airport authority has a redevelopment plan for the property acquired. Proposed land use includes light industrial, walking trails and commercial development parks.

Birmingham city Councilwomen Kim Rafferty, whose district covers portions of the buyout area, said she will notify the city's Public Works Department about the environmental concerns and advised residents to call 311, Birmingham call center, to report such problems. She also urged residents to bring their concerns to a City Council meeting and to write to Mayor William Bell.

Grendel Gaines, administrative assistant to city Councilwoman Maxine Herring Parker, said in an email that public works has agreed to keep the area clean. The councilwoman's district also includes portions of the buyout area.

Walker and Blackmon said they'd like the federal government, the airport authority or the city to buy their properties and relocate them. But officials have said there are no plans to acquire more property than what is slated in the 11-phase project, which is scheduled to end in 2016.

Join a road train, take your hands off the wheel

13 hrs.

The road to driverless cars of the future may be a highway lined with trains of cars that autonomously follow human-driven trucks, according to Volvo.

The car company and its European partners just completed the Safe Road Trains for the Environment (SARTRE) ?project, successfully showing the potential for so-called platooned traffic.

The concept is a step towards a future where we leave all the driving to robots. Here, drivers pilot their cars onto a highway where they join with a regularly scheduled ?road train.??

Once joined up with the train, drivers are free to take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel. Read the newspaper. Play games with the kids in the backseat. Take a nap. When your exit comes up, drivers manually leave the train. The concept is demonstrated in the video below.

The lead truck is driven by a professionally trained human at speeds up to 55 miles per hour. The cars in the train simply follow the lead vehicle.?

The ability for cars to do so comes from existing camera, radar and laser technology developed for systems such as adaptive cruise control and parking assistance, Volvo said.

The only new features are an interface that humans can use to join and leave trains as well as short-range vehicle-to-vehicle communications systems so that cars in the train can talk to each other.

In addition to the joy of not having to stay focused on the road drive down mind-numbing stretches of highway, the technology will save fuel given the reduced air drag, improved traffic flow, and better utilization of available road real estate, according to the SARTRE project.

Before the trains become a reality, hurdles include obstacle avoidance and sudden braking. But such technicalities are smaller feats than those required for fully robotic cars driving down city streets.

Church Basement Ladies headline Mitchell Area Concert Association shows

From comedy to country and everything between, there?s an array of entertainers lined up for the 2012-13 Mitchell Area Concert Association concert series.

Read on for summaries of the shows, which kick off next month. All concerts are at the Corn Palace at 7:30 p.m.

New Odyssey

First on the list is New Odyssey, described simply as ?3 guys, 30 instruments.? Gary Todd, Michael Jay and Gary Polkow combine singing, instrumentals and comedy in a family oriented show Oct. 5 at the Corn Palace. MACA Executive Secretary Jim Blades said what makes the show unique is the demonstration of instrumental ability from each of the musicians. ?The show is going to be good music, but has the specialty of having 30 different instruments,? he said. ?It?ll be a demonstration of flexibility as well as the great musical talent.?

Church Basement Ladies 2: A Second Helping

It?s ?A Second Helping? of the Church Basement Ladies on Feb. 12, a show about ?life, death and new adventures in the world and in their lives.? Though second in the lineup, Blades said he thinks the church basement ladies show will bring in the biggest crowd. ?People love to laugh, and they give a lot of laughs,? he said. According to promotional materials, the sequel is set in 1969 and focuses on the escapades of the women of the Lutheran church basement kitchen during everything from Missionary Night to Super Bowl Sunday. The musical comedy is inspired by the books of Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson, whose works include bestseller ?Growing Up Lutheran.? Blades said the Mitchell show is the second of four versions of the popular plays. In addition to their Mitchell performance, the Church Basement Ladies will perform Feb. 5 in Yankton.

George Dyer Christmas

During the holidays, concert-goers can get a proper dose of Christmas music Dec. 10, when George Dyer performs. His concert also will feature his daughter and a trio of musicians. Dyer got his start in opera (he sings tenor), and has performed with the New York City Opera and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

His programs typically mix well-known opera numbers, Broadway songs and classic jazz/pop numbers such as ?Volare? and ?Mack The Knife,? made famous by crooners Dean Martin and Bobby Darin, respectively.

Take Me Home, John Denver

On May 7, Jim Curry will offer a full-length John Denver tribute concert.

Curry is a long-time musician and songwriter who, according to program materials, does not impersonate Denver; rather, he sings in tribute.

Denver, whose hits included ?Rocky Mountain High,? ?Thank God I?m a Country Boy,? and ?Country Roads,? died in 1997. Curry has said he believes Denver?s ?positive messages of love, humanity and environmental awareness? are just as true now as they were when the songs were first released.

In addition to his Mitchell appearance, Curry will perform today in Yankton and April 18 in Pierre.

Other shows

If fans can?t make any of the Mitchell show dates, MACA Chairwoman Bernie Brooks said eight additional shows can be seen in Huron, Yankton and Pierre.

The Rodney Mack Philadelphia Brass will be in Pierre Sept. 23 and Huron Sept. 24; Home Free Vocal Band will be in Pierre Oct. 22 and Yankton April 28; Siberian Virtuosi will be in Yankton Oct. 28; Two on Tapp will be in Pierre Nov. 4 and Huron Nov. 7; Thuringer Salon Quintet will be in Pierre Feb. 12; Abbey Road Band will be in Huron April 18; Celtic Fire will be in Yankton Feb. 16 and Huron Feb. 17; and Wilson and McKee will be in Pierre April 1.

Memberships available

The MACA is made up of 21 members and annually selects a concert series for Mitchell. Brooks said musical acts are selected from more than 50 choices presented by Allied Concert Services of Minneapolis. Season membership tickets are $50 for individuals, $20 for students and $100 for families. Contributing memberships range from $125 for a donor to $1,000 for a guarantor. ?We couldn?t operate without those sponsors,? Blades said. Memberships and season tickets are available at each of the concerts, or by calling Blades at (605) 996-5081. Individual tickets may be purchased at the door the night of a concert. Blades said MACA memberships will provide admittance into the Huron, Yankton and Pierre shows, as well.

Review: The Summer My Father Died ? Yudit Kiss ? A Common ...

The story of the 20th century can be told in big, sweeping brush-strokes charting the rise and fall of dictators and political movements, the vast spread of world wars and the chaotic effects of natural disasters.? But so often the stories of individuals have so much more to say to us about the day-to-day impact of world movements, the way in which the super-scale phenomena of geopolitics can shape a single life from birth to death and say more about the past? than any text-book history.

Yudit Kiss?s book, The Summer My Father Died, tells the story of her? father, a Hungarian academic and ardent communist, a Jew, who as a child found himself in a foundling home and somehow missed being transported to an extermination camp unlike most of his relatives.? Yudit?s book focuses on the last years of her father?s life, during which he suffered two brain tumours, surviving the first one for seven years until being hit by the second which eventually killed him.

However, the book is more of a memoir than a biography for as she writes at the beginning of her book, ?the story of my father?s death is interwoven with another story that is not concerned with the series of real changes in my father or the events surrounding him.? This other story is made of memories, thoughts and emotions that followed, blended with and, in some cases anticipated reality?.

Yudit?s father, F?l?p Holl? had a long career teaching in the universities in Budapest but the driving force in his life was communism and a belief in human progress.? He had turned away from Judaism believing that communism had supplanted all tribal loyalties -

As far as my father was concerned Jewishness was a form of atavism.? Not only because survivors of the war were of the generation that had tried to rip from their very being the ties that bound them to the terrible exterminations, but because he was convinced that if he redefined himself as a communist that would trump every other definition.

Yudit?s father was convinced that ?everything was imbued with meaning, that progress was irreversible and that mankind could be saved?.? The stubbornness of that belief in the face of so much evidence to the contrary was the driving force in his life and meant that as a father he was little involved with the details of his children?s? lives unless that involved political activity such as study or debate.

Yudit Kiss

Yudit Kiss

As a young woman Yudit went to work for the summer at a Budapest steelworks in order to earn some money for travels.? She was surprised to find that the workers at the steel works had little interest in the great issues of life but spent the days talking about daily frustrations, the uselessness of management and the difficulties of making a living.? When she went home and told her father that as far as she could see, the working class didn?t believe that it was in charge of the nation, her father replied ?They?ll learn . . . they don?t know it but they will? and then went on to give ?a passionate exposition of Hegel and the role of the unconscious forces in the historical process?.

Despite her father?s obsessive belief in the communist system, Yudit seems to have had a rich family life.? The political arguments round the dinner table were obviously times of bonding rather than division.? Life in Budapest was hard but seems to have been imbued with a sense of community and common purpose.? Of course, her father lived through the Hungarian Uprising in 1956 and lived to see the fall of communism in 1989.? In the early spring of 1992, he tried to convince Yudit that the Serbian leader Milosevic was bravely fighting Islamic fundamentalism in Bosnia and hoped that he would be the last bulwark of socialism.? He could never forgive Comrade Tito for becoming a running dog of imperialism and allowing the system that millions had staked their lives on to collapse from within.

With such a father, you would think that Yudit lacked any sense of having been nurtured by her father, but although he was little involved with the practical development of her life such as swimming lessons, school parents? evenings, cycle rides and so on she writes,

. . .? when he did rarely appear, he always gave me something to help me along.? Once he consoled me when I was unhappily in love, with all the concomitant despair and fires of first love; on another occasion he explained why it was always necessary to be honest; on another he told me that I must be responsible for my actions.

By the early 1990?s, F?l?p Holl? was dying from his second tumour.? Yudit describes poignant scenes of the old man in hospital where he gradually sinks away from his fiery convictions and she writes movingly of arriving early at the hospital one day to find him washing -

He washed slowly and systematically.? Face, neck, ears, the shaving foam behind his ears, under the arms, his chest and the upper part of his back.? The careful movements that covered every part of his skin were a reminder of his childhood, when there was no properly equipped bathroom and he had to bend over a full basin or a tub to perform the most thorough of ablutions.

Yudit was reminded of the poem by a Transylvanian poet Arpad Farkas, ?When Old Men Wash?, in which he talks about old people bending over a sink trying to wash themselves clean of all the filth of the twentieth century.

Yudit writes movingly of the time after her father?s death when the family was mortified with grief -

My father?s death excused everything.? When the children shrank from strangers, when I found myself ringing home all the time, when I didn?t finish my work to the given deadline, it was my father?s fault for dying.? Autumn produced its usual fruits: pears, apples, full-bodied grapes . . . death was the constant presence in everything I did.

I enjoyed reading this well-written book which gives a detailed picture of daily life under a communist regime and the loyalty to the system engendered in so many people of earlier generations.? It is at all times interesting and often moving, for this is above all a human story of love of a child for a parent.? F?l?p Holl? was undoubtedly a difficult man at times, but his commitment and faithfulness raised him above the ordinary and I am pleased to have been able to read about him.? It is a compliment to Yudit Kiss that sometimes while reading the book I found myself thinking of Magda Szab??s great novel, The Door, in which she writes about her cleaner, Emerence, another difficult Hungarian character.

The book was translated by author and translator Georges Szirtes, winner of the T S Eliot Prize and Fellow of the Royal Society for Literature.? He translated the much-admired (by me at least) book Metropole by Ferenc Karinthy.? I am not qualified to judge the accuracy of this translation but I felt that the translation certainly didn?t intrude into my reading of the book, it flowed well and left the author with a distinctive ?voice? which was believably Hungarian.

The Summer My Father Died would almost certainly have remained inaccessible to English speakers if it had not been for independent publisher Telegram Books who once again have produced a high quality book of unique value.

Kosovo Court Jails Jevro Pantelic For Nine Years :: Balkan Insight

A Kosovo court on Thursday sentenced Jevro Pantelic to nine years in jail for money laundering and organized crime, the EU rule of law mission, EULEX, said.

Pantelic a businessman from the northern Serb-run part of Kosovo, was arrested in May 2011 by EULEX police and charged on six counts, varying from petrol smuggling to being part of an organized crime network.

The mixed panel of EULEX and Kosovo judges at Mitrovica?s District Court acquitted him of three charges of smuggling goods, tax evasion and evading duties.

The court found Pantelic guilty of being part of an organized criminal group ?consisting of Jordan Raskovic, Srdjan Drobnjak, Miljan Radisaljevic and Milojko Radisavljevic.?

Pantelic then received ?an aggregate punishment of nine years' imprisonment.?

In addition he was ordered to pay a fine of 2,000 euro. A pistol and ammunition, two vehicles and over 14,000 euro of money in cash that were seized during his arrest were confiscated.

The north of Kosovo, which remains largely under the control of Serbia, rejects the authorities in Pristina, who have demanded that EULEX establish greater control over the region.

A Belgrade magazine, Novi Magazin, linked the accused to the Kosovo Serb businessman Zvonko Veselinovic, wanted by the Kosovo authorities on nine criminal charges, including the murder of a Kosovo police officer, an attack on UN and NATO personnel and petrol smuggling.

CSN: Sveum tells Cubs to get heads in game

September 20, 2012, 5:34 pm

This is what a real contender looks like.

That had to be the takeaway after the Reds clinched a wild card with Thursday?s 5-3 win over the Cubs and didn?t even bother to celebrate inside the cramped visiting clubhouse.? ?
When Dale Sveum won the stadium club press conference last November, he promised to get this team to play every night like it?s Game 7 of the World Series.

The smallest announced crowd at Wrigley Field this season ? 25,891 but nowhere near that inside the building ? watched the Reds (91-59) finish off a three-game sweep that reminded you how far the Cubs still have to go.

This felt like the crash after the Cubs (58-92) appeared to get a nice bounce from almost fighting the Nationals in a bench-clearing brawl two weeks ago in Washington.

Maybe they?ll get exposed in October, but the Reds seem to have it all now. A centerpiece in Joey Votto. A young, healthy rotation. Bench guys like Todd Frazier and Chris Heisey who could play every day somewhere else. A diverse bullpen that can throw heat or kill you softly. ?

That?s what the Cubs should look like in...2015?

Jason Berken ? a guy the Cubs claimed off waivers from Baltimore 13 days ago ? matched potential Cy Young Award winner Johnny Cueto with six shutout innings. ?

But otherwise the Cubs seemed a bit off, whether it was Starlin Castro getting picked off first base in the second inning, or being stranded after a leadoff triple in the fourth.

Gold Glove candidate Darwin Barney almost threw a ball into the visiting dugout on a tough play. Reliever Manuel Corpas allowed five consecutive singles in what turned out to be a five-run seventh inning.

And Sveum still couldn?t believe that Luis Valbuena, the potential tying run, was picked off second base to end the sixth inning the night before.

?It seems we have one of these things every three, four days that are just not even explainable,? Sveum said. ?You obviously don?t practice staying on a base when a pitcher isn?t on the mound. Things (like) that just boggle your mind.

?For major-league players that have played a lot of baseball to be looking off into left field before the pitcher?s on the mound ? these things get unacceptable and why these things happen drives you crazy as a manager. Because you just have no rhyme or reason for things like that to happen.?

Sveum said that?s not on the coaching staff.

?If we?re screwing up bunt plays or fundamental breakdowns and all that ? that can be a reflection,? Sveum said. ?But I don?t take anything to heart when a player gets picked off standing and gazing at the stars.

?It?s not one of those where he was dogging it or anything like that. It?s just: Why (do) these brain farts happen??

Berken ? who spent almost the entire season at Baltimore?s Triple-A affiliate ? certainly feels a sense of urgency.

?There?s always something to prove,? Berken said. ?You?re never comfortable and you can never assume anything. For me, it?s a matter of stringing together a couple more good starts and going into the offseason on a positive note. By no means is it time to ease off or sit back.?

Berken said he checks the standings to see how the Orioles are doing, and still has a lot of friends over in that clubhouse. Whatever hopes he may have had of being dropped into a pennant race and experiencing this magical season in Baltimore, he?s fighting for a job here now.

?I?m extremely happy for those guys,? Berken said. ?They deserve everything they get. It?s a great city, great organization and I don?t think anybody over there is surprised, including myself.

?This opportunity is not something I take lightly. I want to take advantage of it as much as I can. I?m thrilled to be a Cub. It means a lot to be here. It?s on me now to do my part.?? ?

You know the Cardinals won?t have any problems focusing this weekend. Not with a playoff spot on the line, Chris Carpenter making his first start of the season on Friday and all those St. Louis fans dressed in red filling the seats.

Pretty soon it will be time to go golfing, hunting and fishing, but there are still 12 games left and the Cubs are on notice. ?

?We don?t have people here that are guaranteed jobs,? Sveum said. ?That alone is a motivating factor for stuff like that to not happen. You got to learn how to focus 300 pitches a game, nine innings. ? Those are things we?re evaluating for people that we want in this organization when we get ready to win.?

Analysis: Romney can still win, but it won't be easy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The last few weeks have been ugly for Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney.

A flat Republican convention, a fumbled response to unrest in the Middle East, reports of discord within his campaign and a secretly taped video of Romney deriding 47 percent of U.S. voters have left his team reeling - and has many Republicans fearing doom in the November 6 election.

There's more.

Democratic President Barack Obama has opened a slight lead over Romney in national polls, and new surveys indicate that Obama has a significant edge where it matters most: in Ohio, Virginia and Florida, the most coveted of nine politically divided "swing" states that are crucial to cobbling together the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House.

So, seven weeks before the election, is it already over for Mitt Romney?

Not yet. Despite the serial gaffes and the many questions about his campaign, Romney remains within striking range of the president.

The former Massachusetts governor still has time to change the trajectory of the race - even though he has not shown an ability to do so for the past several months, as he has cast Obama as a failure in overseeing a struggling economy.

There are three presidential debates in October, and Romney - who during the past month lightened his campaign schedule in favor of debate practices - clearly is pointing toward the showdowns with Obama as a chance to show Americans he is a better bet to turn things around.

Obama remains vulnerable thanks to a stubbornly high 8.1 percent unemployment rate, tepid economic growth and big majorities of voters who believe the United States is on the wrong track.

"Romney just came out of one of the worst months in presidential politics in recent memory, and he's hanging right in there," Republican strategist Rich Galen said. "If I was one of Obama's guys in Chicago, I'd be thinking: 'What does it take to get rid of this guy?' He won't go away."

Romney still faces huge challenges.

Surveys indicate most Americans see Obama as relating to their concerns better than Romney, a former private equity executive with an estimated fortune of up to $250 million.

A Republican convention dedicated to humanizing Romney appeared to have no lasting impact on voters. The video of Romney denigrating Obama's supporters as not paying income taxes and living off government handouts reinforced Democrats' message that Romney is an out-of-touch rich guy.

ROMNEY MUST SOFTEN IMAGE

To have any hope of beating Obama, Romney must project a warmer image, analysts say.

Romney appeared to be trying to do that late on Wednesday in Florida, where he softened his tone on Obama's healthcare overhaul and on illegal immigration, and told Univision that "this is a campaign about the 100 percent."

The comments came as his campaign opened a new assault on Obama that aimed to cast the president as wanting to redistribute wealth from rich Americans to the less fortunate.

"The question for Romney is whether he can do what he so far has not been able to do, which is turn around his personal image and make people more comfortable with him," said pollster Andrew Kohut of the Pew Research Center.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll this week found more than 40 percent of voters viewed Romney less favorably after seeing the "47 percent" video. A USA Today/Gallup poll found the video made almost one-third of independents less likely to vote for him.

"Romney's likability is still not great. People don't see him as credible, he's not seen as empathetic," Kohut said. "He's got to find a way to overcome all those things."

As his campaign has struggled, there has been no shortage of advice from prominent Republicans, many of whom have urged him to be tougher on Obama and more specific on his plans.

In a Wall Street Journal column on Thursday, Republican strategist Karl Rove wrote that "Romney has had a bad week but he can recover - if he tells voters more clearly what he would do as president."

A gaffe-free closing stretch from the sometimes awkward Romney is another key. "I think it would really help if he stops making mistakes," Galen said.

The stakes will be enormous at the first presidential debate on October 3 in Denver. It will focus on the economy and set the narrative for the final month of the campaign.

"Romney will have his best chance to paint a vivid and compelling picture of a brighter economic future," Republican pollster Whit Ayres said.

The Real Clear Politics average of national polls put Obama ahead by 3.1 percentage points on Thursday, with the Rasmussen daily tracking poll showing Obama with a 2-point lead and Gallup showing a dead-even race.

Other polls this week showed Obama with a larger lead, and in some cases crossing the 50 percent benchmark in support.

The Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll on Thursday had Obama leading 48 percent to 43 percent. A Pew poll gave Obama an 8-point edge, 51 percent to 43 percent, and an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll had Obama leading by 50 percent to 45 percent.

Obama also leads in eight of the nine most competitive toss-up states, giving him more options as he tries to piece together 270 electoral votes. Obama could survive a loss in Ohio or Florida - or even both - but losses in either state would be crippling to Romney.

"The lead Obama has in these critical states is far from insurmountable. They are in single digits," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College poll. "If the national dialogue were to shift two or three points, those battleground states would get close in a hurry."

A PUSH IN 'SWING' STATES

The leader in the presidential race in mid-September typically holds on to win. But recent contests also have shown the race can shift dramatically in the last two months.

On September 20, 2004, the Real Clear Politics average of national polls gave President George W. Bush an average 5.7- percentage-point lead over Democrat John Kerry. He eventually beat Kerry by only 1.5 points.

The Romney campaign has cited the 1980 race as a model, when Republican Ronald Reagan trailed Democratic President Jimmy Carter for much of the autumn in the Gallup poll but blew open the race late after a strong performance in their only debate.

But recent polls show no signs of improvement for Romney on some key indicators. The Pew poll found Obama was seen by a 3-to-1 ratio as the candidate who connects best with Americans.

Romney's lead on handling the economy, the biggest issue in the election, also has faded, with the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll showing Romney and Obama tied on the issue. Pew and Gallup polls also found Democratic enthusiasm had jumped since Obama's nominating convention.

Republicans in "swing" states said, however, they were encouraged by the Romney campaign's voter-turnout efforts, designed to counter Obama's vaunted organization.

Fergus Cullen, a former state Republican chairman in New Hampshire, said Romney's campaign there was more organized than Republican John McCain's effort in 2008.

"With McCain in 2008, we could feel it slipping away by late September," Cullen said. "I don't feel that at all this time."

Ayres said that Romney "is in every bit as strong a position to win the presidency today as he was in June or July or August. Is he ahead? No. Is he close against an incumbent president? Most definitely. Does he have the potential to win? Without question."

Actress sues California man behind anti-Muslim film

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - An actress in an anti-Islam film that triggered violent protests across the Muslim world sued a California man linked to its production on Wednesday for fraud and slander, saying she had received death threats after the video was posted on YouTube.

Actress Cindy Lee Garcia, who also named Google Inc and its YouTube unit as defendants, asked that the film be removed from YouTube and said her right to privacy had been violated and her life endangered, among other allegations.

It was the first known civil lawsuit connected to the making of the video, which depicts the Prophet Mohammad as a womanizer and a fool, and helped generate a torrent of violence across the Muslim world last week.

The violence included an attack on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi in which the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed. U.S. and other foreign embassies were also stormed in cities in Asia, Africa and the Middle East by furious Muslims.

Garcia accused a producer of the movie, whom she identified as Nakoula Basseley Nakoula and said he used the alias Sam Bacile, of duping her into appearing in a "hateful" film that she had been led to believe was a simple desert adventure movie.

"There was no mention of 'Mohammed' during filming or on set. There were no references made to religion nor was there any sexual content of which Ms. Garcia was aware," said the lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.

For many Muslims, any depiction of the prophet is blasphemous. Caricatures deemed insulting in the past have provoked protests and drawn condemnation from officials, preachers, ordinary Muslims and many Christians.

"This lawsuit is not an attack on the First Amendment nor on the right for Americans to say what they think, but does request that the offending content be removed from the Internet," the lawsuit said.

A representative for Nakoula's criminal attorney declined to comment on the lawsuit. A Google spokesman said the company was reviewing the complaint and "will be in court tomorrow."

APPARENT DUBBING

Garcia, who had a relatively small part in a trailer available online, has said that her character was forced to give away her child to a character named "Master George" in one scene. An expired casting call available online describes a character named George as a "strong leader" and a "tyrant."

But in the English-language trailer at YouTube, Garcia's character appears to be dubbed over in that scene, with a voice-over for her character referring to Mohammad instead of George.

Garcia's lawsuit said her voice was also "dubbed into Arabic" in another version of the trailer.

She said the film, which has circulated online as a 13-minute trailer, had prompted her family to refuse to allow her to see or babysit her grandchildren, fearing for their safety.

The suit accuses Nakoula, Google and YouTube of invasion of privacy, unfair business practices, the use of Garcia's likeness without permission and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

U.S. officials have said authorities were not investigating the film project itself and that even if it was inflammatory or led to violence, simply producing it cannot be considered a crime in the United States, which has strong free speech laws.

But Nakoula, a Coptic Christian California man who pleaded guilty to bank fraud in 2010, was interviewed by federal probation officers on Saturday probing whether he violated the terms of his release while making the film.

Nakoula, who was released from prison in 2011, is prohibited from accessing the Web or assuming aliases without the approval of his probation officer, court records show. Violations could result in him being sent back to prison.

Nakoula, 55, did not return to his house in the Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos following his interview with federal probation officers, and his whereabouts are unknown. Last week, he denied involvement in the film in a phone call to his Coptic bishop in Los Angeles.

US housing starts rose 2.3 percent in August

(AP) ? U.S. builders started work on more homes in August, driven by the fastest pace of single-family home construction in more than two years. The increase suggests the housing recovery may be gaining strength.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that construction of homes and apartments rose 2.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 750,000 last month.

Single-family housing starts rose 5.5 percent to an annual rate of 535,000 homes, the best pace since April 2010. Apartment construction, which can be volatile from month to month, fell 4.9 percent.

Applications for building permits, which are a good sign of future construction, fell to an annual rate of 803,000. Still that's down from a four-year high reached in July.

The rate of construction has risen nearly 60 percent since hitting a recession low of 478,000 in April 2009. It's still half the pace considered healthy. But the steady gains suggest the housing recovery could endure.

Confidence among builders rose in September to the highest level in more than six years, according to a survey released Tuesday by the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo. And builders are more confident that sales will improve over the next six months, the survey noted.

Sales of both new and previously occupied homes are running ahead of last year. Home prices are increasing more consistently, in part because the supply of homes has shrunk and foreclosures have eased. And mortgage rates remain near record lows, a strong enticement for potential buyers with good credit.

The economy will likely benefit if home prices continue to rise. When that happens, Americans typically feel wealthier and boost consumer spending, which drives 70 percent of growth.

Even with the gains, the housing market remains weak. Many would-be buyers are having difficulty qualifying for loans or can't afford the larger down payments being required by banks.

Though new homes represent less than 20 percent of the housing sales market, they have an outsize impact on the economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in tax revenue, according to the NAHB's data.

The Federal Reserve last week announced new stimulus measures intended to keep mortgage rates low for the next few years.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the bank would purchase $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities each month until the job market improves "substantially." That could push down longer-term interest rates and spur more borrowing and spending.

The Fed also hopes that lower mortgage rates will accelerate the housing market recovery and boost home prices. That, in turn, could make people feel wealthier and more willing to spend, which would bolster economic growth.
