Do You Understand How Valuable Umbrella Insurance May Be ...

?

Did you know that if the sub contractor working on your house happens to get hurt, it is your responsibility to cover damages and not the contractors? When I was a subcontractor toiling for Circuit City and afterward Direct TV, I was informed that I had to buy my own contractors Insurance policy to cover disability, damages and workers compensation Insurance. For factors which can be understandable I always assumed if I fell off the roof when setting up a dish, or got hurt installing a home theater system? it was on me to pay for injuries and damages.
I have got two stories to explaine to you. One day while I was setting up a TV over a living room wall for a buyer, their dog walked up to me and bit my hand, pretty dam hard. Evidently the power drill that I was using spooked him. So I called the office and then report it, and they said?and I quote this ?you?ve got insurance coverage finish the job and go see a doctor?. Can you believe it? Not surprisingly the first thing anybody ever says when their pet bites a person is ?Ohh..he has never done that before? I know the animal got scared and didn?t intend to sink its teeth into me. Nevertheless my company and customer didn?t even recommend to cover the stitches. I get bit and my office tells me to pay for it. Now if I was a spiteful man I?d have sued the household and had their home insurance coverage pay for it, but?. fortunate for them I am not.
Another tale goes like this. A year after a new contractor working for the same company travels to a (Low income) customer?s home to set up a direct TV dish. (We are going to call him Bob?not his actual name)When Bob is on his ladder hanging the dish to the home, the purchaser?s bratty kid pulls a temper tantrum throwing stuff around and then the 14yr old pushes the ladder Bob was on causing him to plummet 28 feet breaking his leg & collar bone. As soon as he was rushed to the emergency room and then the accident is reported to the owner of the company. This company says?and I quote ?so the child pushed the ladder and you fell? you?ve gotten your own personal contractors insurance coverage?don?t you dare sue the customer? you pay for it?. Needless to say ?Bob? is not gonna allow them to get away with it, and then he sues the house owner. Then the company we had been subbing for FIRES (Bob) for suing the customer. Following the legal cases settle 2 years afterward it comes to around $950,000.00 after court fees. The property owners homeowners insurance policy barely covered $300,000.00 and fortunately for him the home owner had an umbrella insurance policy that covered the rest. And then the business we were toiling for filed bankruptcy and disappeared off the face of the planet.(Owing myself and five other guyz 3 weeks pay).
So these are two examples, of two people, doing the same job?would you feel like taking the chance of not getting sufficient insurance coverage to look after yourself? Or do you feel lucky and hope you find a contractor who will allow an injury to slide? It?s up to you to make a decision.
