Actress Remini asks police to find wife of Scientology leader

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Leah Remini, who recently left the Church of Scientology, has filed a missing person report with Los Angeles police for the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, a source close to the actress said on Thursday.

The whereabouts of Shelly Miscavige have been a focus of church critics, who claim she has not appeared in public in six years.

Los Angeles police said they received a missing person report on Shelly Miscavige, but would not say if Remini was behind it or when the report was filed.

Remini's actions could pose a challenge to the church, which relies heavily on its celebrity members for visibility. Tom Cruise and John Travolta are among the most well-known members and only a handful of celebrities have left.

Remini, 43, who is best known for her role in the CBS comedy "The King of Queens," recently left the church after coming under special scrutiny after she asked about the whereabouts of Miscavige's wife, the New York Post newspaper reported.

Remini had asked why Shelly Miscavige was not at the 2006 wedding of Cruise to actress Katie Holmes, the newspaper said. Remini's representatives have not confirmed that event.

The Church of Scientology did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment, but has in the past said that Shelly Miscavige is not missing and that she has been working "non-stop" in the church.

The religion, which was founded in 1954 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, believes man is an immortal being whose experience extends beyond one lifetime.

Senate roundly rejects proposal to halt Egypt aid

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate roundly rejected a proposal Wednesday to redirect aid for Egypt into bridge-building projects in the U.S. after a potential Republican presidential candidate and tea party favorite challenged the Obama administration's refusal to label the ouster of Egypt's president a military coup.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky's amendment to next year's transportation bill would have halted the $1.5 billion in mainly military assistance the U.S. provides Egypt each year.

He cited the U.S. law banning most forms of support for countries that suffer a military "coup," a determination the administration has said it won't make about the Egyptian army's July 3 ouster of the Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. And he invoked U.S. infrastructure shortcomings as well as Detroit's bankruptcy and Chicago's violence to make his case for the money to be put back into the domestic economy.

"Our nation's bridges are crumbling," said Paul, who has previously failed in attempts to cut U.S. support programs for Egypt, Libya and Pakistan. "I propose that we take the billion dollars that is now being illegally given to Egypt and spend it at home."

The Senate voted 86-13 against the measure, the first to be proposed in either chamber of Congress since the army arrested Morsi, suspended the constitution and cracked down on the Muslim Brotherhood. A series of deadly protests have taken place since in what was once Washington's strongest ally in the Muslim world, but which has faced near constant turmoil since the revolution that toppled dictator Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

The vote laid bare a stark division among Republicans, pitting libertarians like Paul against hawks such as Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham, who plan to visit Egypt next week at President Barack Obama's request to press for new elections. They were joined by Sens. Bob Corker and Jim Inhofe, the top Republicans on the Senate's foreign relations and armed services committees, in speaking out against the amendment.

"It's important that we send a message to Egypt that we're not abandoning them," McCain said. Right now, Egypt is "descending into chaos. It's going to be a threat to the United States."

Sen. Marco Rubio, a potential rival of Paul's for the GOP ticket in 2016, sought middle ground by urging Egypt's aid to be restructured to better serve U.S. interests. Paul didn't gain Rubio's vote, but he did get that of minority leader Sen. Mitch McConnell.

On Tuesday, Graham had told reporters that holding the vote at all could send the wrong signal to Egypt. Cutting off the aid could threaten Israel's security and U.S. counterterrorism efforts, while backing Paul's proposal risked giving the impression that the U.S. is indifferent to the military's actions.

The Obama administration told lawmakers last week it won't declare Egypt's government overthrow a coup, guided by similar concerns about suspending programs that secure Israel's borders and fight weapons smuggling into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. It also fears losing its greatest source of leverage with Egypt's military leadership.

The administration's position is largely supported by Senate Democrats, who voted unanimously against Paul.

"This amendment may be good politics, but it is bad policy," said Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

What Was the Point of Windows RT?

Microsoft recently revealed quarterly numbers and it's not good news for the curious Surface RT.

Surface RT

Microsoft recently revealed some sorry Surface tablet numbers. Its latest quarterly filing disclosed earnings of $853 million in revenue from Surface tablets, but it wrote down $900 million because too many were built and the unwanted surplus units are now stuck in a warehouse.

More importantly, ASUS is dropping the lousy Surface RT. Why was there a Surface RT in the first place?

It was quite a feat for Microsoft to port Windows 8 onto the ARM chip. In fact, the first Surface tablets released to the public were the ARM-based units and by all accounts they have better battery life and are quite slick and usable. If any company other than Microsoft released the things, they would have been a huge success.

But any product Microsoft rolls out must be fully compatible with all the other Windows products or else what's the point? The Surface RT was more of an exercise in futility. It can't process run-of-the-mill Windows programs at all.

Microsoft tried a similar stunt during the Windows NT era when it ported Windows to the Power PC chip, the Alpha chip, and the MIPS processor. Microsoft can do this but nobody outside of the confines of the Redmond compound actually wants these products. They invariably fail.

It's possible Microsoft conducts these sorts of experiments every so often just to make sure it isn't missing out on some secret underground change in the public's habits. Thus the Surface RT experiment.

Whether Microsoft will refresh the machine in its next round of upgrades remains to be seen. I would expect one more upgrade, then death. The company does not like to bail out at the drop of a hat unless the public is storming the gates with pitchforks and flaming torches. So it will give it an upgrade and see what happens, just in case.

But make no mistake, the Surface RT is not a failure. It's not a machine I would like because it's not optimized as a laptop, but it is as usable as any other tablet. There are more apps and support for the iPad, but I can see people buying the Surface for its versatility.

And we must remember Microsoft is opening stores everywhere and rolling out its stores-within-a-store concept at Best Buys nationwide. The Surface is a showpiece for these operations, as will be the Xbox One.

I don't consider the Surface numbers and the write-downs to be an actual failure. It just amounts to Microsoft making the little mistakes it always makes. The blunders won't force the company out of hardware any time soon. After all, the company took forever to make money on the Xbox.

NBA Rumors: Would Rockets Trade Jeremy Lin to Bobcats, Celtics, Hawks or Lakers?

The Houston Rockets are saying all the right things regarding Jeremy Lin. They maintain that he isn?t going to be dealt, that he is an integral part of the organization, and that the acquisition of Dwight Howard will in no way substantially reduce his role with the team. Along the same lines, Lin too is saying exactly what he needs to say. Just a couple of weeks ago, in fact, he tweeted out that he is preparing for the upcoming season in Houston.

Of course, as everyone knows by now, perception and reality are two very different things in the NBA. While both the Rockets and Lin may be reciting the same company line, it?s a known fact that the organization wouldn?t be opposed to trading him. Daryl Morey made that clear privately in the aftermath of the Howard acquisition ? putting both him and Asik up on the open market. Thus far, there have been no takers. It?s still early, though, and anything can change before and during the NBA season.

There has been a lot of speculation floating around the web regarding where precisely Lin would land if Houston was able to move him. For weeks the Detroit Pistons were repeatedly mentioned as an ideal stop for him. Unfortunately, this past Tuesday, the team decided to throw its money at the black hole known as Brandon Jennings. Lin would?ve been a superb fit in Detroit?s backcourt, and a perfect guy to balance out Josh Smith penchant for taking horrendous shots, but the prospect of that happening is officially dead.

Here are the other teams that folks have speculated about this summer: the Charlotte Bobcats, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Lakers. Let?s take a look at them one by one.

Bobcats ? After the Pistons, this made the most sense for all involved. Kemba Walker is what he is. If you compare his 36 minute totals to Lin?s, he is a marginally better scorer and a marginally worse passer. What the stats don?t tell you, however, is the fact that Walker did his damage on a team with no legitimate offensive playmakers ? allowing him to do pretty much whatever he wanted. The Rockets, meanwhile, even without Howard, were stacked ? leaving Lin with much less room to operate. For comparison?s sake: Walker?s usage percentage was 25.6; Lin?s usage percentage was 20.8. What Lin provides that Walker doesn?t, though, is a brand name and a recognizable face you can build around. If Lin could handle the bright lights of New York at 23, he can handle Charlotte. ?

Celtics ? The Celtics make a whole lot of sense for Lin, too. They want to dump Rajon Rondo; the Rockets want a pass-first point guard who would complement James Harden more than Lin currently does. On paper, it?s a great swap. Kris Humphries suddenly isn?t the most recognizable player on the Celtics anymore, and Houston becomes an even more legitimate championship contender. The problem is that Howard reportedly isn?t too fond of the idea of playing with Rondo. And it?s way too early in the game for the Rockets to piss off Howard with a move that they don?t need to make yet.

Hawks ? The Hawks need a reliable point guard who can direct an offense, and Lin fits the bill. Moreover, they reportedly really like Asik. Houston and Atlanta could probably work out a swap, if the latter group is even kind of willing to part ways with its best assets. Unfortunately, the Hawks are in full on cost-cutting mode right now ? and neither Asik nor Lin is particularly cheap.

Lakers ? This won?t happen. It?s natural that the Lakers get brought up, because, you know, they?re the Lakers. But this team a.) doesn?t want to commit big money before next summer and b.) can?t add a ball-dominating guard while Kobe Bryant is still alive.

In the end, Detroit was an ideal place for Lin to go. As they made clear with the Jennings sign-and-trade, they needed a capable floor general. And while Lin didn?t come into the league with the same sort of critical acclaim, at this stage, he?s a better basketball player than Jennings is.

Facebook announces Mobile Games Publishing pilot program

Facebook announces Mobile Games Publishing pilot program

Facebook has reportedly been toying around with the idea of launching a distribution platform for mobile games, boosting advertising revenue by also taking a cut of sales. As of today, the initiative is official: a new Mobile Games Publishing page is now live on Facebook's developers site. The pilot program is designed for small and medium-sized gaming developers -- after signing up, Facebook will help developers target consumers who might be interested in playing. Additionally, the site will provide feedback through analytics tools, enabling developers to refine their approach in response to customer interest. The program isn't open to everyone just yet, but if you're a small to mid-sized dev that Facebook identifies as "high-potential," you might just have a shot at joining up.
